If you are in the US, and merely re-charging the system using one of those canisters from Auto Zone or NAPA or one of those other fine parts houses doesn't work, you can't (unless you work for an HVAC-licensed repair facility). Federal law requires that the gaseous fluid used in automotive A/C systems must be handled in such a way as to prevent it's release into the environment. Long story short, that means you have to have the expensive machinery to extract the fluid from your A/C system and properly store it. Before you rush out to Walmart for such a machine, it would be cheaper to buy another BMW from what I am told.

Okay, so you've asked around and located a trusted shop certified to work on A/C systems.

You've described two different problems. (1) A/C doesn't cool, and (2) A/C doesn't work in the back seat.

(1) Sounds like a typical lack of Freon (that gaseous fluid mentioned earlier). The system probably developed a leak after all these years (my Honda Accord system only went 15 years). The shop will charge the system with more Freon but it will have an invisible dye. You can't see it but a "black light" can. They will locate the leak, seal it up, re-charge the system, and you're on your way.

The hitch here might be in the type of Freon. Your car is early enough that the Freon is likely the older R12 Freon. The least expensive fix is to have the shop find and repair the leaks and have the system re-charged with R12.

The expensive route is to have the system overhauled, replacing all of the seals with Neoprene and several of the components (like the dryer and condensor), and converted to R134a (the current Freon in automotive use). This must be done carefully since there are all kinds of ways it can go wrong if short-cuts are taken or cheap alternate Freon mixtures are tried.

If you'd like to see what's involved in a minimalistic do-it-yourself way:

If you'd like to read up on Freon and such in more detail:

(2) Sounds like the problem I also had on the Honda once. Turned out the rear air came through ductwork that ran along the center tunnel and out under the front seat with the ducts aimed at the back seat. The whole thing worked like a champ until one day coming back from the lake the kids kicked their towels under the front seats and blocked both A/C outlets! :-)

There you go. More than you ever wanted to know about subject. Enjoy! :-)

Middle back seat: seat belt is locked up & will not release!!!

DO NOT CUT YOUR SEATBELT!!! Simply unbolt the seat from the body, unbolt the seatbelt from the body under the seat, tilt the seat forward, pull the seatbelt and part that attaches to the body between the seat cushion and backrest and release the tension. Not the easiest fix, but it only takes 30 minutes to do, and will save you a LOT of money. If you cut that seatbelt, you will be buying a new rear seat.

Idle goes from 1000 rpm to 1800 rpm shortly after cold or warm start. Replaced the idle air control, no fix there. There is no bleed valve for the cooling system.

For the engine RPM problem, you probably have a vacuum leak (cracked hose, bad PCV valve, intake plenum or manifold gasket, leaking brake vacuum booster, etc.).

Some Honda engines are not equipped with bleed valves for the cooling system. If you would like to know if yours was originally equipped with one and where it is located, you will need to say which engine your Honda is equipped with.

i don't have a solution but my car did the same thing in october 2009 and i still have not had it repaired. I am told it is something electrical because its your fuel pump is not coming on and that is why the car is not starting but it doesnt make since why the windows and power seats dont work. I have also been told the only thing that connects the 3 of them is the body control module.

Speedometer

check for a connector not fully seated.

here's info

Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
On vehicles equipped with 4-wheel anti-lock brake systems (4WABS), the vehicle speed signal is generated by the rear anti-lock brake sensor and sent to the 4WABS module. The 4WABS module sends the vehicle speed signal via circuit 679 (GY/BK) to all systems that require a vehicle speed signal input. Vehicles equipped with rear anti-lock brakes (RABS) generate a vehicle speed signal from the rear axle speed sensor. The generic electronic module (GEM) receives this signal (VSS_GEM) for internal use and then distributes it to the appropriate other users (i.e., the powertrain control module [PCM], speed control module, and speedometer).
Speedometer
The electronic speedometer (17255) receives a speed signal from the 4WABS module (if equipped with 4WABS) or the generic electronic module (GEM)/central timer module (CTM) (if equipped with RABS). RABS = Rear antilock brake system

Power seat not working

My drivers side power seat stopped moving forward and back...back rest still worked. Took it to dealer and they charged me $60 to fix a "loose wire."
The seat worked for 2-3 days and quit again. Took it back to the dealer, and they now said it needed a new motor and track at a cost of $750+. Told them to forget it and called GM. GM will not cover it, and they have not covered a host of other problems like new radiator, new water pump, new instrument guage cluster, cracked exhaust manifold, and misaligned rear door/window air deflector (which they even have a bulletin out to all service department that it is poor design and the body shop should "shave the plastic down so it doesn't hit roof when door is open).

Back to the seat, I took a large, flat blade screwdriver and ran it along the seat guide rails and pryed on the seat mount slightly....guess what? It the power seat now moves forward and back.

Bottom line is GM manufactures junk and will not stand behind it. Now we know why the company is going bankrupt.
