Do you have to take the car to a Volvo Dealer? Is it expensive?

My daughter just purchased this car not even one week ago.

U will need to have a volvo enhanced scantool.
Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) TCM-0100 is stored if the transmission control module (TCM) registers that the quality of gearshifts in the transmission is too low.
Substitute value

  • The transmission control module (TCM) "Emergency mode I" program has been initiated.
Fault symptom[s]
  • The warning lamp for the automatic transmission flashes.
  • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lit. Remedy any other diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored for the transmission control module (TCM) first. One of these faults could have caused diagnostic trouble code (DTC) TCM-0100.
    • Ignition on.
    • Read off diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).

Well what has happened as you pretty much know , is that there is a fault in the transmission system , thus the reason for the check engine light , and the flashing arrow , wintermode has been disabeld , and in order to diagnose and find the problem , you will need to have a volvo enhanced scantool , so that you can retrieve codes and trouble code info . i went ahead and pasted some info for you relating to the flashing arrow

This could be one more reason:

->>>>The PNP switch might be bad or out of adjustment.

For PNP switch replacement try this link

Hi there,

Try rowing the shifter back and forth about 20 times, with the engine running (brakes on, of course)
The PNP switch can get stuck.
You should have the codes read and see what's stored in the computer.
You can try to clear it with a code reader but it will probably come right back

Good Luck

Do a Compression Test, do a VISUAL INSPECTION of the Spark Plugs. If there is a COLOR DIFFERENCE and / or the Spark plugs on Cylinder 1 and 2 are CLEAN. you have a blown head gasket.

Orange flashing arrow light was on,on my 2000 s40volvo and then it shut of by itself

have the same problem with our 2001 s40 and stumbled onto a site like this with a couple answers.
1 your transmission could be going, however that is the extreme.
2 ours accelerates very slow when the light is flashing which means the winter traction is engaged even though we have not pushed button. to reset this you can turn your car off (key all the way back) and on 5 times consecutively and it resets itself most of the time.
3 sorry to type this, but just make sure you did not push the "w" button on the shifter area platform
hope this helps

2002 trooper A/T 4WD will not move from start or stop.

One of two things has happened. Either you have lost first and second gear in your tranny (Winter drive starts you out in third gear) or your TCM (Transmission control module) is shot.

Check the TCM first, it's the lesser (cheaper) of the two evils.

What type of oil does a 2002 Volvo S40 turbo engine require?

Castrol GTX 10w-30 or 5w-30 should work fine. Use 10w-30 if your in a state that gets temperatures below 35 in the winter.

Flashing upside down arrow/ slow acceleration

This is a common problem of Volvo S40. You can try this trick to turn off the flashing arrow light.

1) Turn off Engine
2) Turn key to "On" position (Not start the engine), you will see the panel light will on
3) Step on the break paddle
4) Shift the gear from "P" to "L" 10 times
5) Turn key to " Off" position
6) Now you can start the engine.
7) If doesn't work, you can repeat the procedure.

Hope this tick help
Good luck

1995 volvo 960 stuck in winter mode

Where roy might have a possible source, it is most likely the park neutral switch which has started to fail. This is indicated by the shift arrow flashing on the dash. Replacement of this component is relatively difficult without a lift

Mode w engaged

when the arrow light is flashing it means the car is in what they call "limp home mode" its supposed to reduce power output in order to prevent further damage to the vehicle. usually kicks in when you're "hot rodding" the car for a long period of time. however i have no idea why it would come on if you just shifted from 3 to L unless the computer felt you were endangering the transmission
