If the car clicks, but does not turn over the engine, check the battery posts.if it is turning the starter, but will not start...that is a different issue.the air flow sensor that is between the air filter and the throttle body may have a loose connector.the plugs have to be the exact match for the vehicle,or the ecu will not work properly.
make sure the fuel filter is not leaking,it would result in air in the system.check all the connectors, wires and make sure the plugs are the right ones

I have a 1997 Pontiac Grand am. will not start, cranks over you can hear the fuel pump and can smell gas, seems to be getting spark, trys to start then dies. I had this problem 1 1/2 years ago had it towed...

Sounds like your ICM has gone bad and will need to be replaced. They start giving starting problems or at times will stop working when it starts to get hot, and when they fail total. You run in to the issues your are having now.

Good luck and keep us posted and you can have your ICM tested first before replacing just to make sure your not replacing good parts.

Thank you for using fixya

Car does not always roll over, sometimes if I try quickly to turn it a few times it will start but not always.

Do you mean the motor does not turn all the time when you try to start it with the key?
this could be :
1:!gnition switch needs replacing
2:Starter motor replacing/overhaul
3:Check your wiring

Problems with starting

Coupla things:
1) I guesssed hot start - I think the system is dealing with gas volatility and trying to ensure that a minimum of unburnt fuel is released into the cat - in the long run, that is good for the air and your car. 2) Here is a tip which really is a tip for everyone for every start. Turn the key to on, but wait a second until you hear the fuel pump cut off - that means the fuel rail is fully pressuruzed, and the car should start right up, for a cold start. It may also reduce the longer crank times during a #1.
