92 honda lx automatic is surging, not shifting right

Can be a few things. 1) Check the shift solenoids on top of the transmission (front). Remove them and clean out the screens. This would mean your transmission fluid is over due for changing. 2) Maybe it's the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), locate and change that. It's on top of the transmission back under the thermostat area. 3) It could be your Transmission Control Unit (TCU). It's under the floor carpet on your passenger side near the firewall. There is a metal plater covering your ECU and your TCU. The TCU is the smaller box. Remove it, open it and look for burnt items. If you're handy you can replace those items. If you are replacing the unit, make sure it is from a known good one and it matches your car exactly, ie: EX, LX, DX, SE, sport shift button present?, etc... on the circuit board.

Below is a picture of the TCU opened up, here are the transmission codes that your car can display if you are inclined to jump the OBD wire plug to get the reading.

TCU Codes:

CODE LIST:

1-Lock-up solenoid 'A' circuit open or shorted.
2-Lock-up solenoid 'B' circuit open or shorted.
3-Throttle Position Sensor circuit open or shorted.
4-Vehicle Speed Sensor open or shorted - No signal from speedometer.
5-Shift Lever Position Switch circuit shorted.
6-Shift Lever Position Switch circuit open.
7-Shift Solenoid 'A' circuit open or shorted.
8-Shift Solenoid 'B' circuit open or shorted.
9-Counter shaft or transmission speed pulse generator open or shorted.
10-Coolant Temperature Sensor open or shorted.
11-Engine RPM (Ignition coil signal) open or shorted.
12-(No code 12 used)
13-Main shaft speed pulse generator open or shorted.
14-Linear (line pressure control) solenoid open or shorted.
15-Kick down switch circuit shorted.

Flashing S button 1991 Honda accord

the flashing S light on your car is your tcu "transmission control unit" sending a trouble code to your dash this could mean alot of differant things if im not mistaken it will be an electrical problem not mechanical. is your speedometer just randomly jumping? the reason i ask is i drive a 91 as well and my S light is blinking and my speedometer jumps and sometimes doesnt work at all the the code for the S or tcu is 4 which is the vss "vehicle speed censor" eventually your check engine light will probably come on and if the code is 17 then its your vss as well but you can check the code by getting either a paper clip or small wire and using it as a jumper wire there is a little blue wiring harness on the passenger side of your car under the glove box use the paper clip or wire and plug them in "dont worry you wont get shocked ive done this plenty of times and in the rapair manual it tells you to do this" when you do this make sure the paper clip or wire is secure and put you key in the ignition and turn it to where your dash lights up but dont start the car the S light will start to blink count the blinks "1 long blink is 10, 1 small blink is 1" example if the light stays on for a couple of seconds and turns off and then blinks 4 times that would be code 14, if your check engine light blinks count that as well if you need help with checking any of it there is a video on you tube i believe the title is how do you check the check engine light on a 91 honda accord. or something of that nature. if you get the codes tell me what they are I may be able to find them and get more specific about what is goin on I hope this helps

What does it mean when the transmission does not shift and the d4 flashes it shows also code 11 16 17

CODE 11 is a Transmission Control Unit Code
CODE 16 is sometimes a Fuel Filter Issue (due to starving the injectors for fuel)
CODE 17 is the Vehicle Speed Sensor (responsible for communicating with your Tachometer and speedometer) This also causes the D light to flash and on some Accords with a "sport shifter" the S light will flash.

11-Engine RPM (Ignition coil signal) open or shorted.
16 Fuel injectors
17 VSS - speed sensor

Changing your VSS is the cheapest place to start. It is located on the back of your transmission (workable from standing near your passenger side front tire). Remove your air intake tube to see it more clearly, it will be located on the trans below your thermostat housing. Unplug it, and use a 10mm socket, then wiggle it out. You can find a new one on eBay pretty cheap. After you change it, unplug your battery for a few seconds to clear your check engine codes.

The worst case is that your TCU had failed. Below is a description of that.

D4 light stays on and car does not change gears; speedometer ok

Had the same problem with my 92 accord LX, almost drove me Crazy. The car seemed to be taking off in second or third gear, and not shifting at all. Then it would work perfectly for a while, but kept getting worse and finally the problem was constant. I checked all the shifter relays on the transmission, took them apart and cleaned them, checked for power, all was well. My problem was the Transmission Control Unit. ( TCU ) It is located under the Passenger side carpet. Remove the carpet, then unbolt the kickplate. The TCU is bolted to the underside of the kickplate. So is the ECU (engine control unit) they are marked. My problem was Ants, they had made a nest there. I unbolted the TCU from the kickplate, unplugged it and removed the top cover of the unit, (4 screws on the sides). I sprayed the hell out of it with WD-40. I also plugged and unplugged the connector many times to assure connectivity. Been working like a dream for 3 years. Your problem may be a bad TCU. You should test it before reassembly. Just plug it in, and jump it to ground. The D4-3... and reverse lights should be lighting up. Disconnect the Battery before starting repair. Goodluck.

Flashing green s on the dash

A green flashing "S" is similar to a check engine light. It is telling you that something in or on your transmission is not functioning correctly, such as the speed sensor or shift control solenoids. If it starts flashing and the speedometer stops working or the transmission shifts weird, take it to a mechanic.
