Transmission is worn and previous owner has added transmission fluid additives like Lucas transmission oil to try to make it last longer. The fluid is burn and needs to be changed, best thing to do is to have the transmission fluid and filter changed and add some additives to the fluid and try not to drive it to hard.
It shift's hard when your driving at normal speeds because the fluid is thicker then it should and the transmission line pressure is higher due to the thicker fluid. At WOT the transmission slips so it seams smoother and that's why the fluid is burnt.
Good luck and hope this helps. Do not do a trany flush, the transmission is already worn out, but the dirty fluid will make it worst too.

97 Lincoln Continental whining noise when driving noise increases when pressing on gas also sometimes when starting the car it goes away once in awhile

that whine you are hearing is the transmissions torque converter , it is low on fluid , how long since you had auto tranny flushed , pull the tranny dipstick , fluid should be red or pink , if it is brown or even worse BLACK , your transmission is ready to fail

1988 chevy 4x4 k1500 auto tranny wont shift into 2nd, 3rd etc

Check the sensors on the transmission. May just be corrosion on the sensors or it may be a faulty sensor. Also, the torque converter bearing may have went bad due to the running it on low transmission fluid.

I have a 1994 GMC 1500 ext cab, 2wd, with a 5.7 V8. when I bought it I noticed that the tranny fluid was brown in color and it would shift hard into 2nd gear, more so when cold. Now the truck has seemed to...

Hi Charles, Pull out the dip stick from the transmission and smell the oil. If it smells burned with the other symptoms described it sounds as if the transmission brakes and clutches have already been damaged, which basically means a replacement transmission or rebuilding the one you have. Sorry to be the harbinger of bad news, but if I'm guessing correctly, you expected it? Regards John

Why wont my transmision shift

Have you checked your transmission fluid lately?
More often then not that is the cause of shifting problems. Normally this happens gradually which is to be expected since transmission leaks are usually slow. The first signs are a slight hesitation when the car is first started in the morning and put in reverse. The the car seems to lag just a bit before moving back. This increases as more fluid is lost.
Another cause is from the transmission not being properly serviced. Leave the tranny fluid in to long and it becomes burnt. At this point it the viscosity is more like cooking oil instead of transmission fluid.

Most people neglect this item because of a lack of understanding about the transmission system. As opposed to the engine that everyone knows NO Oil =No Car. Although the service interval is greater when compared to the engine oil it needs to be taken care of to prevent "No Car" also.

Check your tranny fluid. Open the hood and located the tranny fluid dip stick. Usually along the firewall. Read what it says because normally the car needs to be running and in neutral to get an accurate reading.

Also look and smell the oil on the stick. If it's brown and/or it smells like it's burnt have the tranny serviced. This involves draining the fluid, replacing the filter and new fluid.

I hope this helps and good luck.

I just bought a '93 Lincoln Town Car, 210K miles. My first thought it to have all of the fluids replaced to "reset" the timer, so to speak. Trans Fluid, Engine Oil, PS fluid, Brake fluid, Diff Oil,...

Great Ideal !! Most can be done at a oil change place !! Also I would use a good high milage vehicle oil!! I'm a mechanic of 30 years and this is what i use in my older FORD van!!swampratt200 !! aaeee!!!
