Question about 2004 Kia Optima

1 Answer

2004 Optima won't start. and 'emission' light came on.

.The battery, timing belt and starter are good. The gas flows. But the car won't start. After sitting all night, it started this morning and was good all day. Tonight, however, it won't start again. The emission light is on still. Feels like a sensor is not good.

There is a few things you need to check:

  1. mass air flow sensor
  2. o2 sensors
  3. catalytic converter
I would take it to Advance or Auto Zone and get a free diagnostic reading. Let me know if what the codes are and I can tell you what it is. With the emissions light on there is going to be some code that it is pulling.

Recheck your timing marks. Sounds like valve timing is off. Check compression it needs a minimum 90 lbs to run. Bet you money the timing belt was put on out of phase.

Starters getting really hot, why?

In simple terms, the starter gets hot from a high amount of voltage flowing thru it.
The why part is another thing.
Could be a bad connection between the starter and the battery including the ground. Could be a problem with the engine not wanting to turn over. For example, if you broke a timing belt the engine may lock up.

I just got my crank sensor and timing belt done and my car quit after a week. took it to the shop they said now it is the starter.the shop claims the wires are old and the starter is going.I just spent 500...

the timing belt and sensor keep it in time and sync,, that shouldn't prevent it from starting, if starting is the issue you may need a starter,, depending on the mileage this is just one of those things, I have a Kia and mine went out at 120k
