CORRECT IGNITION TIMING PROCEDURE

I RECENTLY READ A POST WHERE A PERSON ASKED ABOUT USING A TIMING LIGHT TO TIME A RELIANT. THE RESPONSE WAS THAT YOU DO NOT USE A TIMING LIGHT TO SET THE TIMING ON A RELIANT; MY QUESTION IS IF A TIMING LIGHT IS NOT USED, WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE FOR SETTING THE TIMING? THANKS, -DWIGHTDAYMEN

I don't know who posted that but yes you need to use a timing light. Unplug the coolant temp sensor and set the timing to what the underhood sticker says with a timing light.

the timing light is used only to see if you installed correctly, crank & cam have aero marks make sure when you align those aeros they stay on position when you tight the tension they might move so set it a little off counterclockwise so when you tight it it will come to the right position hope this helps you.

After changing the oil and filter, reset the monitor by proceeding as follows:

Turn ignition On, but do not start engine.

Fully depress and release accelerator pedal three times within five seconds.

If CHANGE ENGINE OIL lamp flashes for five seconds, this indicates system has reset.

Start engine. OIL LIFE should change to 100%.

How to reset ECU,Throttle and Accelerator Position Learning


Hi.

Below the procedure to reset ECU,Throttle and to perform Accelerator Position Learning on Nissan. It works on Titan, Altima, Infinity, pathfinder and other models.

ECU Resetting


While performing the procedures below, ensue that you are respecting the times stated. If the steps are not done within the specified times, the module will not reset. You will need to use a watch or a chronograph while performing the procedures.

Procedure:

1. Ensure that the accelerator pedal is fully released, set ignition switch to the “ON” position, then wait 3 seconds.
2. Follow the steps a and b below, repeat the two steps in sequence quickly for five times within 5 seconds.
a. Push hard the accelerator pedal untill fully depressed.
b. Release the accelerator pedal in full.
3. Wait 7 seconds, then depress the accelerator pedal completely, and hold it for about 10 seconds until the CEL (check engine light) starts blinking.
4. Release the accelerator pedal while the CEL is still blinking.
5. Wait 10 second.
6. Depressthe accelerator pedal in full and hold it for 10 seconds or more.
7. Fully release the accelerator pedal while the CEL light keeps flashing.
8. Turn the ignition switch to “OFF” position and start the vehicle. If procedure has been done correctly, then the light light will turn off.
If the light continues to stay on, repeat the procedure.

Accelerator Pedal Release Position Learning

Procedure

1. Ensure that the accelerator pedal is completely released before starting the procedure.
2. Turn the ignition switch “ON” and wait at least 2 seconds.
3. Turn the ignition switch “OFF”, and wait at least 10 seconds.
4. Turn the ignition switch “ON” and wait 2 seconds.
5. Turn the ignition switch “OFF” and wait 10 seconds.

Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning

Procedure

1. Ensure that accelerator pedal is completely released.
2. Turn ignition switch to the “ON” position.
3. Turn ignition switch to the “OFF” position and wait at least 10 seconds.
Ensure that the throttle valve moves after turning the switch off.

Idle Air Volume Learning (Throttle Position Learning)

Procedure

1. Follow the Accelerator Pedal Released Position Learning described above.
2. Do the Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning also described above.
3. Start the engine, and allow warming up.
4. Turn the ignition on “OFF” positionand wait 10 seconds.
5. Ensure that accelerator pedal is fully released, then turn the ignition switch to “ON” position, and wait 3 seconds.
6. Repeat the steps a and b below five times within 5 seconds in sequence.
a. Push hard the accelerator pedal untill fully depressed.
b. Release the accelerator pedal until reaching full extension.
8. Wait 7 seconds or more, depress the accelerator pedal completely and hold the pedal down for about 20 seconds until you see that the Check Engine Light stops blinking and starts getting steady..
9. Rrelease completely the accelerator pedal within 3 seconds after the light coming ON.
10. Start engine and let it run at idle for about 20 seconds.
12. Test the engine to ensure the idle speed and ignition timing are set correctly.

  7. If the reading is okay, replace the TFI module.
  8. If the result was not satisfactory, service the wiring between the pin in-line connector and the TFI connector.

This procedure should not be used as a periodic maintenance adjustment. Timing should only be set after the distributor has been disturbed (removed and re-installed) in some way. If problems are encountered setting the initial timing with this procedure and no mechanical causes are found, follow the spark timing advance check procedure found later in this section.
Do not change the ignition timing by the use of a different octane rod without having the proper authority to do so. Federal emission requirements will be affected.
  1. Locate the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley and the front of the engine.
  2. Clean off the timing marks so that you can see them.
  3. Mark the timing marks with a piece of chalk or with paint. Color the mark on the scale that will indicate the correct timing when it is aligned with the mark on the pulley or the pointer. It is also helpful to mark the notch in the pulley or the tip of the pointer with a small dab of color.
  4. Start the engine and allow it to run until it reaches normal operating temperature.
CAUTION NEVER run an engine in a garage or building without proper ventilation. Carbon monoxide will quickly enter the body, excluding oxygen from the blood stream. This condition will cause dizziness, sleepiness and eventually death.
  1. Once normal operating temperature has been reached, shut the engine OFF.
  2. Firmly apply the parking brake and block the drive wheels. Place the transmission in P(A/T) or NEUTRAL(M/T, as applicable).
  3. Make sure heater and A/C, along with all other accessories are in the OFF position.
  4. Connect an inductive timing light, such as the Rotunda 059-00006 or equivalent, to the No. 1 spark plug wire, according the tool manufacturer's instructions.
  5. Connect a tachometer to the ignition coil connection using an alligator clip. This can be done by inserting the alligator clip into the back of the connector, onto the dark green/yellow dotted wire.
DO NOT allow the alligator clip to accidentally ground to a metal surface while attached to the coil connector as that could permanently damage the ignition coil.
  1. Disconnect the single wire in-line SPOUT connector which connects the control computer (usually terminal 36) to the ignition control module. This will prevent the electronic ignition from advancing the timing during the set procedure.
  2. Using a suitable socket or wrench, loosen the distributor hold-down bolt slightly at this time, BUT DO NOT ALLOW THE DISTRIBUTOR TO MOVE or timing will have to be set regardless of the current conditions.
A remote starter must NOT be used to start the vehicle when setting the initial ignition timing. Disconnecting the start wire at the starter relay will cause the ignition control module to revert to Start Mode timing after the vehicle is started. Reconnecting the start wire after the vehicle is running WILL NOT correct the timing.
  1. Start the engine (using the ignition key and NOT a remote starter to assure timing will be set correctly) and allow the engine to return to normal operating temperature.
  2. With the engine running at the specified rpm, check the initial timing. If adjustments must be made, rotate the distributor while watching the timing marks. Once proper adjustment has been reached, make sure the distributor is not disturbed until the hold-down bolt can be secured.
  3. Reconnect the single wire in-line SPOUT connector and check the timing to verify that the distributor is now advancing beyond the initial setting.
  4. Shut the engine OFF and tighten the distributor bolt while CAREFULLY holding the distributor from turning. If the distributor moves, you will have to start the engine and reset the timing.
  5. Restart the engine and repeat the procedure to check the timing and verify that it did not change
  6. Shut the engine OFF, then disconnect the tachometer and timing light.

Timing marks consisting of O marks or scales can be found on the rim of the crankshaft pulley and the timing cover. The mark(s) on the pulley correspond(s) to the position of the piston in the number 1 cylinder. A stroboscopic (dynamic) timing light is used, which is hooked into the circuit of the No. 1 cylinder spark plug. Every time the spark plug fires, the timing light flashes. By aiming the timing light at the timing marks while the engine is running, the exact position of the piston within the cylinder can be easily read since the stroboscopic flash makes the pulley appear to be standing still. Proper timing is indicated when the mark and scale are in proper alignment.

This service procedure is for setting base ignition timing. Refer to underhood emission sticker for any additional service procedure steps and/or specifications.
These engines require a tachometer hook-up to the check connector-see illustrations. NEVER allow the tachometer terminal to become grounded; severe and expensive damage can occur to the coil and/or igniter.
Some tachometers are not compatible with this ignition system, confirm the compatibility of your unit before using.
  1. Warm the engine to normal operating temperature. Turn off all electrical accessories. Do not attempt to check timing specification or idle speed on a cold engine.

  1. Connect a tachometer (connect the tachometer (+) terminal to the terminal IG- of the check connector) and check the engine idle speed to be sure it is within the specification given in the Tune-Up Specifications chart or underhood emission sticker.
  2. Remove the cap on the diagnostic check connector. Using a small jumper wire or Special Service Tool SST 09843-18020, short terminals TE1 (test terminal No. 1) and E1 (earth-ground) together.
  3. If the timing marks are difficult to see, shut the engine OFF and use a dab of paint or chalk to make them more visible.
  4. Connect a timing light according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  1. Start the engine and use the timing light to observe the timing marks. With the jumper wire in the check connector the timing should be to specifications (refer to underhood emission sticker as necessary) with the engine fully warmed up (at correct idle speed) and the transmission in correct position. If the timing is not correct, loosen the bolts at the distributor just enough so that the distributor can be turned. Turn the distributor to advance or ****** the timing as required. Once the proper marks are seen to align with the timing light, timing is correct.

  1. Without changing the position of the distributor, tighten the distributor bolts and double check the timing with the light (check idle speed as necessary).
  2. Disconnect the jumper wire or Special Service Tool (SST) at the diagnostic check connector.

This jumper will be used repeatedly during diagnostics in later sections. Take the time to make a proper jumper with correct terminals or probes. It's a valuable special tool for very low cost.
  1. Refer to the underhood emission sticker for timing specification and any additional service procedure steps. If necessary, repeat the timing adjustment procedure.
  2. Shut the engine OFF and disconnect all test equipment. Roadtest the vehicle for proper operation.

How do I set timing or where are the marks sposed to be


You really cannot set the timing because your ECM controls ignition timing as well as the RPM's through many different sensors. Below is a desciption of the system as well the method to check the timing and where the marks are at and the chart of what the specifications should be at. Also is the over all check to narrow down if anything is off step by step per the factory service manual. I wasn't sure what size engine you had so I went with the most common one for that year (2.5 liter) You can only post up to 150KB per picture so I made it as big as I could. There are procedures you can do to "teach" your ECM/computer how to idle as well as adjust air/fuel mixture which will change the way it runs if the sensors are working correctly. If you cannot see this because it is to small, you would like those relearn/teaching procedures or if you have the 3.5 liter engine feel free to write me at csautomotivecars@att.net and I will be happy to send any information that you need. Even have procedures on checking different sensors and wiring diagrams that come in handy. Is your "check engine" light on? I ask because you would need to correct whatever the problem is in order to get a good reading from anything as your ECM will try to adjust things just to make it run better until you can fix the problem.
