This is a (o2 I think) sensor on top of the engine, right hand side. I had my car worked on and this happened when I picked it up. The repairman had unplugged it and when it was plugged back in, it worked fine.

Do you know what code you have. There are some trans codes that will cause a harsh shift. If you can get me some code to go by I will be better able to help you. Good Luck

Ok, check the transmission fluid asap. make sure the fluid level is proper. the engine light may be a different issue so, i recommend taking the vehicle to a local auto zone for a free diagnostic scan or you can take to your local dealership as well. the light is signaling a major issue within the engine. it could possibly be a dead sensor or a busted transmission control or shift solenoid. running the scan on the ecm.pcm will unmask the issue at hand.

there is a dip stick under the hood. it will say transmission fluid on the handle. pull and check the level by reading the tip of the dip stick once pulled put.

Now, if this transmission is sealed, you will need to take this car to the dealership for service asap. this is unlikely and, it should be a dip stick under the hood in the front. remember to make sure it says trans fluid and not oil on the dip stick..

My '99 Malibu is shifting hard when it starts to get warm. I've taken to a tranny shop and they couldn't find anything wrong. someone mentioned about the motor mounts? how serious is this? and will it...

the shift linkage to transmission may be out of adjustment. on the chevy malibus the tps ( throttle position sensor ) has a big effect on how tranny shifts. check tps first. it is on side of throttle body, at the throttle plate.

Check engine light came on and now shifts hard from park to drive

The engine light is telling you, you have a transmission problem which sound like a shift solenoid. If you take the care to a local garage or dealer you can have them scan the vehicle for the problem code, which will tell you which solenoid is bad.

That would be the transmission and motor mounts. Take it to a auto repair facility.
