Question about 1992 Volkswagen GTI

To low idle

When the engine is cold, stood still for 6 hours or more, the idle is to low, even in the wintertime it wont raise more than til 800 -950 rpm. Another thing, I wonder if it is a common problem at vw golf, that the wiring, at least some of it, from the fuse cube easily burns?

    it is a bit difficult to explain the problem in english, due to, it is not my given language.

    I park the car in the evening, the same does 3 of my neightbors, next morning ( this is during wintertime 4 below zero celsius.)all of us fire up, the 3 other cars are spinning around about 1800 rpm, mine is max. 1100 rpm. engine oil are only 1 month old. It is fully synt. 10W/40 royal purple oil. made in the USA. what about the idle valve ? this is an old engine it, has run 195000 km. But is in supreme condition.

Since you said that the speed of the engine not goes beyond 950 rpm , the problem lies with the engine.get an authorized service personnel to open up and check up your engine for any wear and tear on piston rings or the crank shaft couplings with that of piston.and also change the engine oil ..hope your problem will be tackled.

I have a 1986 GMC 1500 with a 5.0 and stock rochester carb. The truck will start but you must keep gassing it as it won't idle. It kicks off every time. Any suggestions on how to fix this cold natured


fast idle speed screw, works off the fast idle cam which the choke adjustment sets, it works together by linkages. This is the raised idle speed setting you need to keep a cold engine running. First you set the idle speed by the idle speed screw with engine at normal operating temperature. Then you set the linkage up so the cam is on a raised step, throttle will be held on that raised step. then you can turn the idle speed screw to get idle at about 1500-1800 rpm. Now when you start engine cold, choke will set the fast idle cam on that raised step- when engine starts and runs it should be running at your fast idle setting. That's how it supposed to work, you just have to get everything adjusted right. I hate carburetors, they never stay adjusted right. Considering their complexity and small mechanical parts, no wonder.

How to adjust idle?


hot engine ?, cold or both,, EFI runs in 3 modes, cold ,warm and hot.

name it.

which engine option (displacement)??????



there is no idle adjust, that is the PCMs, job 100%, all the time.

Carbs are gone.

here is rule one for all EFI.

idle is the last thing to work correctly.

anything the causes a gross imbalance of engine power to engine load, under idle will cause , idle controls to fail.



low idling causes. (over 50 but, here ar basics)

1: AFR (air fuel mixture too lean) usually surges. (clogged or leaking injectors. or fuel pressure way to high)

2: air leaks, cause racing, so not that. (speed density car ,if is)

3: egr stuck open. low idle and misfire.

4: ISC stuck closed (IAC electric)

5: cam belt slipped, timing retarded, compression at 1/2 spec, and well, valve will bend soon....

6: CEL glowing running? can be in limphome, limp cancels Idle controls (in may cases) RTM read the FSM on DTCs.



if fails hot?, is hot = 180F temp or more? "thermometer time"

if not, the PCM goes , quite nuts.

It can be issue with IAC( idle air control valve) causing the problem.


There are many other possibilities causing these idle issues. Engine idles rough.

My 1995 geo prism stalls when turning left


100 % left or partial , not right?
on a hot or cold engine block.? or both.
no other symptoms, no engine power loss. up tall hills.
no loss of idle speed, 800 normal, 400 rpm not.
many suzukis have a P/S limit switch that sends a command to
the ECU (EFI) to raise idle due to driver overloading (dont) the P/S
by slamming it into the stops.
in very extreme temperatures (air) the idle can be too low.
like in Nunavut , Canada? and this switch can come in handy.
when RPMs are hard to control on a cold engine.'

You may need a reset of the immobiliser..you do this by pressing the alarm arm button while strating the engine.

I Have a 95 deville , replaced thermostat and have heat only when engine RPM ran up , nothing on idle speed. Whats up?


Either you are low on coolant or you still have an air pocket in the system after you replaced the thermostat.

With the engine cold remove the radiator cap. Top off the radiator if low. Start the engine and allow to warm up at idle, topping of the coolant as necessary. Once the thermostat has opened, the upper hose will get hot. Snap the throttle a couple of time. This will help force coolant into the heater core and push out the air. Once the cooling fans come on replace the radiator cap.

Raise the engine RPM'S to about 2,500 and hold it until there is sufficient heat out of the vents. Let the engine idle, Id there constant heat? If not snap the throttle a couple more times and then raise the RPM's up again.

first of course make sure the basics are ok and not in major need of a tune-up, after that check the throttle plate for excessive coking build-up, the computer is reliant on small amounts of air passing through to properly raise idle, usually this problem becomes prominent when your a/c pump comes one (which can even come on when using the heater or de-frost) especially when the car is cold( restarting the engine a couple of times can affect the engine temp, though probably unlikely) An injector cleaning has also been effective in elevating idle,but wont correct the problem in itself, as cleaning the throttle plate can.(check with vehicle maker for any precautions to take when cleaning throttle plate. I usually use carb-cleaner and a tooth brush. Also check for vacuum leaks and wiring harnesses. Listen for a fuel pump prime when key is turned to the on position(usually 2 or 3 seconds) this usually just causes extended cranking time though . check this stuff if all ok give me more info and I'll give you some tips on how to isolate your problem

99 Ford zx2 wont idle after i degreased the engine.


I would start with a compressoin check. You should get more then 160 psi on each cylinder on a cold engine. If these numbers are low, then the timing belt is your likely issue. Since these engines are non-interference (don't let anyone tell you different) you can just put a new belt and pulley kit on and be done with it. I even have a how-to for this in my tips and tricks on my profile.

A bad MAF (mass air flow) sensor can cause rough running problems. This is easily tested by unplugging the MAF (4 or 6 wire plug) from the vehicle to see if running improves. The connector for the MAF can be found on the front of the airbox just after the air filter locking ring.

If that isn't the issue, a fuel pressure test is an order. You should see around 45 psi with the engine at idle and 60 psi with the engine off and key on.
