The original problem with my 1999 chevy silverado was when it didn't want to start. my husband changed the fuel filter and truck was running fine. I drove it and was going up a hill and goosed it. the truck took off and the transmission shifted harder than usual. the check ingine light came on then the truck wouldn't hardley move and once it did move it backfired and sputtered off and on. Can you tell me where to start looking for the problem. I know a catalitic converter also has the same symptoms of being sluggish and not pulling.
There are to many things to look for that cause the symptoms you described. Best thing to do is get it scanned for a DTC code, that's why your check engine light is on. Auto Zone scan's for free and most auto shop's now scan for around $10.00 to $15.00 since almost every shop has a scanner and want the business.
The scan is going to give you a miss fire code with other codes to why such as to the left or right side banks running lean or both running lean and may be a transmission code to why it shifted hard.
Good luck and keep me posted, as long as there is a engine management problem the transmission may not shift in to it's 4th gear and OD may not activate so take care not to burn out the transmission.
Take a fuel pressure check. If your fuel pressure is marginal it can cause your problem. Pump could be weak.
