sense both are working their are a few free things you can do , one is stop by auto zone have them put on their scanner for you live data and look at the coolant temp see if it reflects the temp on the gauge. Then when hot check the temp of each side of radiator see if their is a temp difference this will tell you if you have a clogg. If this is something that has been gradualy getting worse and worse then its time to have the coolant system flushed. This is general maint that should be done and your service manual will tell you when nissan says to. Other areas of interset would be the thermostat and water pump. If the truck has never had a flush before the coolant after time becomes corrosive and can eat away at the impeller on the water pump and the result is poor cooling. Do the free things first verify gauge reading and check temp of each side of rad.

Sounds like time for a rad flush, new thermostat, and have the condensor & rad cleaned of bugs etc, to start with.

Changed xterra manual automatic transmission , now it's overheating

What's overheating? the engine or the transmission? If the transmission is getting hot, then most likely the cooler lines weren't cleaned. If it is the engine. It's just coincidence. Start with the thermostat.

I have a 2001 alero and it is overheating, I have replaced the thermostat, water pump, heads, head gaskets, fan motors, relay switch to the fans and it acts like it wants to run hot. When I "test...

The most probable cause of both problems is with the replacement heads. As far as knocking goes, hard to diagnose from here - usual causes are a noisy hydraulic lifter (which, if severe, should be replaced) or a failing piston bearing or incorrect head/head gasket (piston banging on head which is very serious). Also, if the head gaskets were incorrectly installed or the wrong heads were used, you could have blocked some of the cooling water ports.

Overheating can also be caused by a blocked radiator - the system circulates the cooling water into the bottom of the radiator and the water cools as it circulated up to the top and back to the engine. A quick way to check when overheating is to CAREFULLY see if there is a hot-to-cooler temperature gradient in the radiator from bottom to top.

I have a 2001 nissan xterra 6 cyl I have replaced the thermostat and still its overheating. What is the next step?

I can't believe that your radiator is shot, it's a new truck. How about clogged? How about full of bugs or hay in the front? How about the coolant? Are you running coolant or water? Look for white smoke or steam coming out the exhaust after it warms up. This you don't want to see. I would get it to a radiator shop and have them check it for a blown head gasket. They will be able to tell what's happening.

Here are a couple of suggestions.

1. Check to see if the electric cooling fans are working properly. Let the car idle until the engine gets hot. Watch to see if the dual fans ever kick in. If the fans never turn on then the problem could be the fans themselves, the fan relay, a fuse, or a temperature sensor.

2. Your thermostat may be stuck closed.

3. When the service engine light is on you can take the car to most auto parts stores and they will pull the codes for you for free. This could help to identify where the problem is.

Running the AC will make the car overheat faster because it loads the engine down. If you driving somewhere and you think you might be overheating and you can't stop to let the car cool down you can roll down the windows and turn on the heater. The heater works by pulling heat out of the engine and moving it to the passenger compartment. It may be uncomfortable but it can temporarily prevent your engine from overheating. This technique is especially useful if you're driving through a desert like in the southwest.
