Question about 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

Not starting, clicks

I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It is having a problem starting whenever it feels like it. If I drive it 3 blocks and turn it off, when I go to get back in and drive it will not start, just clicks and shows the battery symbol and check gauges. All electrical is fine, reads about 12V and if we jump it, it will start up after a few minutes. New battery, alternator and starter are tested fine. It only seems to do this if it is not driven long enough to warm up. Something seems to be draining the battery but nothing is showing open on the dash computer. Any thoughts would be helpful!

Check and clean all connections to & from battery, as in the other ends of cables as well. Make sure starter wires are all in good shape & tight as well. When you hear that click, try to locate area or relay doing the clicking. It may just be a faulty relay. Sometimes it's as simple as removing it and plugging it back in to clean the connection. Do you by chance have a 12volt DC test light to test draw on battery?

Not familiar with the ZJ, but does it have a locking differential? Do they use limited slip additive in ZJ diff? If so, then its probably due for a fluid change and new additive.

My check engine light is on in my 2004 jeep grand cherokee. I have 60000 miles on it and I dont know why the check engine light is on. Also whenever I switch from drive to reverse it is very jerky and...

The check engine light is a general warning that you have a problem that needs attention. Diagnosis of the problem requires a computer scan. You can have this done at most auto shops and parts stores, and many will run the scan at no cost to you. Your transmission problem may be the cause of the light, but even if it's not, the scan may give you some insight into it as well.

The most likely cause of your concern is a slipping belt. Check the power steering drive belt for adequate tension, and the overall condition of the belt. If it's shiny, cracked, oil soaked or frayed it should be replaced.
