Engine gets very hot; air conditioning shuts off

The air conditioner works for a little while and then the engine temp goes way up and the AC shuts off.
The coolant was just replaced and is at full level;
I just replaced the thermostat.

It needs to be diagnosed. It's normal for the AC to shut down when the engine overheats. The engine computer (called the ECU - Engine Control Unit) monitors the coolant temperature by means of a coolant temperature sensor (cts). When this sensor tells the computer the engine is too hot (above 230 to 240 degrees), the ECU turns off the AC compressor and the cooling system fans go to MAXIMUM (HIGH) speed. By the way, there are two engine/coolant temp sensors - one for the instrument gauges, the other for the ECU. If this sensor is malfunctioning, it can cause the symptom you describe - BUT that needs to be verified. Best solution, take it back into the mechanics/technicians and have them determine if that's all this is, because if it isn't, something else could be seriously wrong (clogged radiator, malfunctioning water pump, bad thermostat (even though it's new (or maybe it didn't actually get replaced), and there's a slew of other possible causes.. leaking head gasket for one. Best have the professionals (if they are professional) diagnose it.

My 2010 dodge journey is running hot and the heater is blowing cold air. Temp goes back down to normal while driving. No indicator lights r on. Is it the thermostat or heater core?

Most likely neither is the problem, to verify the heater core is ok go under the hood and touch the heater core coolant supply hoses (hot engine) one will be really hot and one a little cooler, if this is the case the heater core is ok and you have another problem, that other problem is most likely a failed part or parts called the air temperature control blend door motor or door is defective. Also I doubt the engine is overheating, it gets hotter while sitting in traffic because the electric fan that cools the engine only comes on at about 225 degrees Fahrenheit. If you had an overheat condition the check engine light would also come on to alert you of the overheating condition.

My air conditioner quit working and now my 2001 mercury villager estate is getting hot

Can you tell if the radiator fan is working ? It should come on when the engine temp reaches 225 degrees and when the ac is switched on.

The fan wont work car does not get hot shut off

cooling fan works on a temp sensor in the engine block. it only turns on when the temp reaches a set limit and shuts off when it gets below a set limit.. cooling fan components are , fans, fan relay , and temp sensor . best way to test the fans would be to let the car set running and watch the temp till it goes up to 185 -195 deg. at this time the fans should turn on and the thermostat should open and cool the engine back down. also when ever the air conditioning is on so should the cooling fans be on. if the fans do not run the check all components till you find the broken one. fan relay and air conditioning relay are separate but work the same. and will interchange

My heater and air conditioner shut on and off

The air conditioner is controlled by in cab air temperature so if the air temp is low then the ac compressor clutch will cycle as the thermostat switches it on or off. If you want it to work all the time you may have to run the heat as well so that the thermostat is fooled into thinking that the air temp is hot.. Have the system checked out by an auto electrician

Air cinditioning wont stay on, it switches to heat and wont shut off

What do you mean when you say it wont shut off? is it blowing hot air or do you just feel a lite flow of hot air even if you have the settings to cold?

If this is the problem that you always feel hot air at low flow and the ac goes to hot air then i would say one of two things, first if you have the selector to cold and you feel hot air then there may be a problem with the blend door, this door move to allow hot or cold air, the door may be broken or just a bad motor that controls it. keep in mind if the ac system shuts down for any reason the air then will be warm, it will be about the same temp as outside and maybe a little hotter.

this problem almost sounds like the ac compressor shuts off and then you are getting the outside air which is hot, there are many reasons for the compressor to shut off, it could be the compressor clutch heating up and disengaging , this would be due to a bad compressor clutch.

another reason is the fans are not working, the best thing to do is when the system starts to blow warm check and see if the compressor is running, start engine and look at the front of compressor, with ac off the front of it will not move, and then with ac on the front will spin, check it out and let me know, if it blows warm air and ac is not working then it may be compressor problem but if you are getting warm air and the compressor is spinning then it may be a door problem.

This is hard to check with out testing the system, so i listed a few things to check and let me know the out come. also the ac blows cold for how long before it gets hot air blowing out of the vents, good day.

Hard start when engine hot

Clean the temperature sensor wire connector.
Replace the temp sensor.
Check the condition of the sensor wire cut(s) or short onto the engine block.
Monitor the fan operation with the hood open during warm up (0-15 minutes.) It should ran after the engine coolant temp get above 195F +.

Check, clean or change the air filter and breather element.

Fluctuating engine temp a/c sends out cold air intermittently

Here's the thing. The ECU will shut down AC if the engine temperature is too hot. If the coolant temperature sensor is malfunctioning (lying to the ECU) telling it that the temperature is hotter than it actually is, the computer will turn the AC OFF.
