Is the car parked with the steering turned tight or on a hill with the wheel turned in such a way as to load the steering? It may be as simple as turning the steering wheel back and forth while turning the key in order to release the steering lock mechanism.

SOURCE: The key wont turn in the ignition of my hyundai

hi from uk please try this ? with key removed try gently turning steerwheel to the right if you feel a slight spring in steering ? hold on the spring and insert key it should work and release lockand turn ign on ? if steering is springing on left ? try as above the same method not unusual for steer lock to prevent turning key as the steering even in straight position ? the necessity to gently release load on lock is req'd to allow key to turn/unlock the steering lock from the steering column practice doing the above each time you fit key to unlock steering and tuning ign on to start hope this helps

Both keys won't turn igination on my 2006 Honda Accord.....what to do???

Try slightly turning your steering wheel while turning the key. ( Your wheel will be locked but should still be able to move a bit. Don't force the key too much or you could break it, and make things much worse. If that doesn't work your ignition may be defective.

It's not "normal" - it's an ian ignition key lock freeze-up as a known issue; I finally had to get the entire assembly replaced on my Hyundai 2007 Sonata. It happened to me about 8 times and had to have the car towed 2xs....finally relaced it under the 100k warranty to get it fixed = it's covered. Take it into Service and have them fix it.

You need to turn the wheel slightly either left or right until the key turns. That is very common. I know you said the wheels is locked but it will turn slightly one way or the other.

2007 Hyundai Sonata ignition locks up intermittently

Ok this just happened on my 2008 Hyundia Accent. Here is the issue. DO NOT REPLACE YOUR IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER OR ANY PART. All it is is over time the oil in the locking mechanism dries and is used by dirt introduced by the key. The tumbler is no longer pins but strips of metal sitting against one another. When you insert the key the strip goes up and gets stuck and does not come back down. Thus not allowing the steering wheel to lock or the ignition to turn.

How to fix. Its easy and cheap a small hammer and a can of WD-40. I stress this next part DO NOT BASH THE ... OUT OF THE KEY THEN YOU WILL BREAK YOUR TUMBLER AND NEED TO REPLACE. Spray some WD-40 into the lock. Insert the key tap it gently with a hammer and try the key eventually the vibration will drop the piece and the car will turnover. Do repeatedly until you can start the car without a hammer. Than put WD-40 in your ignition tumbler every time you change your oil should never have this problem again. I was in the Navy where I was in charge of 20 plus High Security locks exposed to weather and dirt. A regular maintenance procedure we performed was to disassemble the locks and clean and oil them or they would gum up and lock and then we would have to spend hours breaking off a high security lock(not the easiest thing as you can imagine). I learned quickly it was easier to do preventive maintenance then to fix and replace. If your ignition is gummed up and won\'t turn it may take a hour or so to get it working properly again but it will work and it won\'t cost you 250+ in cash. Hope this helps.
