Question about 1997 Jeep Cherokee

1 Answer

ASD and the fuel pump relays

Does anyone have an idea why 1997 Jeep Cherokee is blowing the fuse between the ASD and the fuel pump relays? The jeep will idle for an hour, but when I pull the shifter in gear the fuse will blow. After that it will blow the fuseevery time I replace it until I let it set for a while.

Sounds like you may have a short in the wiring harness to the transmission. Somewhere from the trans to where it crosses the bellhousing area most likely.

Why can't I hear the fuel pump?

on many cars , you need to crank it.
some have the prime key on for 3 seconds.
on jeeps.
check fuses first
check the ASD relay, if it dont energize the pump relay will be dead.
ASD >>> Fuelpump relay.

on jeeps, the ASD drops after 3 seconds, if the PCM sees errors.

My 1997 jeep grand cherokee limited died on the road now it wont start back battery is still good it seems like its out of gad but there is gas in the tank

If you can hear the pump running inside the tank right after it stalls and you turn the key to the run position, I'd be looking at the crank position sensor. If that fails, fuel will reach the fuel rail but the injectors won't fire. Also check cam sensor, pump relay and ASD relay in power distribution center.

1993 Jeep chreokee Replaced fuse and relays Can not get fire to fuelpump I have checked the fuel pump it is good all new relays and fuses

You have two relays there...the fuel pump relay and the pump bypass relay. Did you check both? Also, did you check the resistor on the drivers fender back near the master cyl? Both relays are powered by the asd relay that is energized by the crank position sensor via the computer.
Also check the connections for the relays underneath the power distribution center.

98 grand cherokee asd relay blowing fuse

The fuse it doing it's job, you have a short ( Wire that is connected to a ground, that draws too much power )

If you have an electrical schematic ( Repair manual ) find out which wires are connected to that fuse and check them for any chaffing, cuts, unnesassary twists, or corrosion.

If you have a ohm-meter, isolate the system ( by disconnecting the fuse, and other connections. Then check for any resistance on wires that should not be connected ( because you disconnected them ) by having one Lead on the wire's connector and the other meter-lead on your car's frame. A good wire will not have continuity if it is isolated.

No spark and no gas now what

Hi,

If you have no spark and no fuel pump operation,I would strongly suspect the Auto Shut Down relay.
The Auto Shut Down (ASD) Relay supplies power to the ignition coil, fuel injector, electric fuel pump, and the oxygen sensor heater element as long as the key is in the START or RUN position and the Single Module Engine Controller (SMEC) is receiving a reference signal from the distributor.
If the SMEC receives no distributor reference signal for two seconds or more the SMEC interrupts power to the ignition coil, fuel injectors, electric fuel pump, and the oxygen sensor heater element by removing the ASD relay ground.

Thanks for contacting Fixya.

Try resetting the asd "auto shut down fuse had a similar problem the jeep would crank but did not get spark or gas also check your fuel pump? and the asd relay may be bad it will prevent the jeep from getting no spark and will not fire some jeeps have security problems

Need to replace relay switch to fuel system and or fuel pump

fuel filter is under neath where gas tank is .it looks like small can with disconnects. your fuel pump relay is under the hood where fuses is.
