Good comment. Yes, the car will not start. The little finger on the back of the tensioner is loose. Sould it be tight

If its broken it definately would not make the car start and get the engine's timing off

yes, it should be tight enough that wont wobble around but should have flexibility, but of course you tight it down after you install the timing belt and deal with the timing properly!!

REPLACING THE TIMING BELT ON A 98 VW

you definitely need to replace the belt and water pump and sometimes the tensioner. i would recommend a high mileage belt and a water pump with a metal impeller.
failure to replace the belt immediately can cause severe engine damage.
believe it or not there is a youtube video that shows how to do the belt on a new beetle.

I just changed the waterpoump and thermistate and was wondering how to tighten the timing belt vw beetle 2003 engine 2.0

You'll need a timing belt tension wrench which cost around $10. There is a procedure to do this correctly.c755fbb.jpg

Rating my suggestion tells me if it's the correct solution you're looking for. It should only take a small amount of your time and effort rating it. Thank you.

Replacing the serpentine belt on a New beetle is not easy as it was on the old one.

First you need to remove the Water tank, and undo the hoses near to the water tank.
Then you remove the three bolts securing the tensioner with a 13mm socket wrench, and release the tensioner.
Then you replace the belt.

The procedure is explained here on pages 2 to 5
, do not go over page 5, the rest of the procedure is on replacing the timing belt, and you risk to damage your car by touching the timing belt.

Once you replace serpentine belt, ensure that the pumps is running, that the belt is well in tension, and that is solidly there, not slipping out.

All the repairs must be done or supervised personally by a qulified mechanic.

Regards.

you need a 15mm wrench use the open end of the wrench and put it on the nipple on the top of the tensioner pulley assembly then push it back it will release the tension enough to slip it off the altenator
