It sounds like it's time to have the system serviced. If there is not enough R134 in the system, the A/C will stop working so the compressor will not burn up.
You can take it to a auto shop that service A/C and have them recharge it and look for leaks in the system which is common to have. Most of the time there slow leaks from seals getting oil and worn, not to be concern if the leak is slow enough that you recharge the system once a year.
You could also buy a recharge kit ate Wal-Mart or Auto Zone or most larger Auto Parts store and they should help you out on any question on to recharging the system your self. The kit it self goes for around $45.00 and in the future you need to recharge the system the canisters are around $8.99 each.
Good luck and hope this help. Here is a link you can read about recharging the A/C. http://www.cyberbright.com/autobin/air_conditioning.htm

Check to see if the lever activated by the temperature control cable is actually moving when you move the control. Maybe a stuck valve in the heating system.

I have a 1998 GMC Sonoma P/U not a Lexus. Sorry....The Lexus is made by Toyota and my understanding is that if the switch is bad then of course the light won't work. If my tire blows out do you think it can still hold air?

The heater still won't work after I changed the thermostat on my

Get a female garden hose adapter from the local hardware store. Disconnect the heater hose from behind the fan pulley and attach the hose connection. Disconnect the other heater hose behind the alternator, aim it towards the ground and flush water through the heater core. This worked on my truck.
