Hello jjames696...The gearbox fault light has come on because the transmission control module (TCM) has received a fault signal from one or both of the two trans. sensors....The Output Shaft Speed (OSS) Sensor and/or Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) Sensor. The TCM has now defaulted to limp mode...A diagnostic scan needs to be run...An OBD II scanner will retrive a P1722 fault code, the only code in it's library for the ZF5HP24 transmission. The WDS / IDS will pull other codes not found in the standard OBDII library (dealer or good transmission shop)
When was the last time the transmission was serviced? Manual shifting will take it's toll on the fluid quickly.
The transmission is sealed, no dipstick (which i think is a bad idea) You can check the fluid level by removing a plug on the passenger side of the case, you should be able to touch the fluid with your finger. Jaguar fluid is VERY expensive, Mobil 1 synthetic will work and meets ESSO specs.
Personally...i would change fluid every 25-30k.
Hopefully all you have is a bad sensor or a stuck solenoid and no internal componet damage.
Good luck, hope this answers your question...please take time to rate my fixya reply.

Hmm, there are many factors involved, and what you provided in information is not nearly enough to consider all of such factors to determine the exact cause.

For example, what's the ambient temperature? If it's really cold, the gear may move forward only after having the engine warmed up. Cold weather may affect the shifting of gears as noted in this diagnostic article:
http://yourhandymanzone.com/Your_Handyman_Zone_How_To_Pages_Vehicle_Car_Zone_Cars_Trucks_Vans_Transmission_System_Shifting_In_Automatic_Transmission_Difficult_Cold_Temps.htm

Other considerations as to your "upshift or downshift" inoperability is found in this article:
http://yourhandymanzone.com/Your_Handyman_Zone_How_To_Pages_Vehicle_Car_Zone_Cars_Trucks_Vans_Transmission_System_Shifting_In_Manual_Transmission_No_Poss_Engine_Runs.htm

This is all that I can offer with the limited info you provided; wish I were there to see for myself. Hope this helps. Brad

How get to P0755 fault Jaguar shift solenoid .

that fault code relates to a internal component failure inside the gearbox, or a wiring problem from the powertrain controle module to the gearbox, it all depends on the gearbox that is fitted. if the gearbox has a plastic sump pan the controle module is part of the gearbox, the shift solenoid moves a valve inside the gearbox to direct fluid pressure to the relevant servos to control gearchanges e.t.c.does the car still drive?

Intermittent Gearbox Fault

Suggest you get the TCU codes read (Jaguar dealer or well equipped auto box specialist). Suggest you don't go component changing without a believable diagnosis, could be TCU, could be pressure or speed/load sensors, lots of things, many not as expensive as a new TCU!

Can a replaced non programmed abs affect auto gearbox

The ABS control unit does need to be coded to the vehicle. After coding the control unit, an End-Belt run test must be performed. I know that you will also have transmission faults stored, because the Trans warning is set since the control unit has not been coded
and the control units communicate constantly during engine operation. The trans uses abs input for shift characteristics and helps with power reduction during evasive driving control. A dealer should be able to code and perform the end run test and usually charge about an 1hr fee. They will also need to quick delete other fault memories.
