Question about 2005 Ford Escape

Check Engine Light

I had a coolant leak from a faulty clamp going to my heater core. Now I have the Check Engine light on with the message "Service Emissions System" I took it to the Ford Dealership and they cannot figure out why the light keeps coming on but I do not want to pay to have it reset again and again.

Check ur plugs if coolant got in the plug hole were the coil goes it set the light pull the plug n coil n dry them

Could my rear auxiliary heater core have a blockage?


It is not a blockage if coolant is leaking. Determine if the core itself is leaking or a loose hose clamp. Repair as necessary. Don't ignore it since running the engine pressurizes the hoses and will push out coolant causing engine overheating.

the code is for coolant leak large. Check coolant level and top off.
check the oil for moisture.
pull the plugs to see if any are steam cleaned.
either one could indicate a bad head gasket or worse damaged head.
Check to see if any new hoses have been added. tighten clamps if needed.
look on engine block for any puddles where coolant could be leaking.
pressure test coolant system and check for leaks.
If you can smell coolant inside the vehicle check the heater core.
lastly have an emissions test run with the radiator cap off and at running temperature. Start vehicle with cap off to avoid spray of hot coolant. This tests head gasket and cyl head for leaks.

Water leaking out of overflow from heater core.


If coolant is leaking from the heater core into the interior or through a weep hole out of the car your heater core has sprung a leak.
Most vehicles have easily accessible heater cores, only requiring removal of a panel under the dash or hood to gain access. On the '97 Skylark it's accessible under the dash.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  • Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle.
  • Detach the drain tube, then disconnect the heater hoses from the core tubes.
  • Carefully lower the vehicle.
  • Remove the console if equipped.
  • Unfasten and remove the sound insulators, console extensions and/or steering column filler, as required.
  • Remove the floor or console outlet ductwork and hoses.
  • Remove the heater core access cover.
  • Unfasten the heater core mounting clamps/bolts, then extract the heater core from the vehicle.


To install:
  • Install the heater core, then secure using the clamps/bolts.
  • Fasten the heater core cover.
  • Connect the outlet hoses and ducts.
  • Install the sound insulators, console extensions and/or steering column filler.
  • Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  • Install the drain tube and connect the heater hoses to the core tubes.
  • Carefully lower the vehicle.
  • Connect the negative battery cable.
  • Fill cooling system and check for leaks. Start the engine and allow to come to normal operating temperature. Recheck for leaks and check coolant level. Add if necessary.

The check engine light may be from a low coolant condition. the green fluid inside the car is probably from the heater core that is leaking. so you should check the coolant level and you will have to verify the leak.

Car overheated and lost all power. how do I get it to start?


ENGINE NOT GOING TO START IF GET TOO HOT FIRST THING I WOULD REPLACE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP THEN ADD COOLANT UNTIL COOLANT LEVEL CORRECT THATS WHEN THERMOSTAT OPEN UP AND TOP HOSE HOT.CHECK FOR LEAKING RADIATOR HOSES CHECK TOP RADIATOR HOSE CHECK BOTTOM RADIATOR HOSE.CHECK FOR LEAKS AROUND THE RADIATOR LOOK DOWN BELOW COOLANTS FANS CHECK FOR LEAKS AT RADIATOR CORES OR LEAKS AT THE RADIATOR PLASTIC SIDE CONTAINERS. Smoke coming from a/c vents on ford expedition with sweet smell


The problem is the heater core leaking behind the dashboard. Heater Core Removal & Installation 1997-2002 To Remove:
NOTE: Heater core must be vacuum leak tested before it is remove from vehicle if a heater core leak is suspected.
  1. Drain engine coolant.
  2. Remove instrument panel.
  3. For 5.4L (4V), if quipped, remove junction splash shield.
  4. For 5.4L (4V), if quipped, disconnect starter relay cable. ford-03-00-3579.gif

  5. For 5.4L (4V), if quipped, remove junction block bracket.
  6. Clamp inlet and outlet heater hoses.
  7. Disconnect heater hose from heater core by gently pressing it toward heater core.
  8. Remove A/C plenum demister adapter.
  9. Disconnect vacuum line.
  10. Remove 13 plenum chamber top screws.
  11. Remove blend door assembly from case.
  12. Remove heater core.
To Install:
NOTE: If needed, clean and lubricate coolant hoses with plain water.

  1. Install heater core.
  2. Install blend door assembly to case.
  3. Install 13 plenum chamber top screws.
  4. Connect vacuum line.
  5. Install A/C plenum demister adapter.
  6. Connect heater hose to heater core.
  7. Release all clamps from inlet and outlet heater hoses.
  8. For 5.4L (4V), if quipped, install junction block bracket.
  9. For 5.4L (4V), if quipped, connect starter relay cable.
  10. For 5.4L (4V), if quipped, install junction splash shield.
  11. Install instrument panel.
  12. Refill engine coolant.

  1. Drain the engine coolant into a suitable container.
  2. Open the instrument panel glove compartment. Push in on the sides of the compartment to release it, allowing access to the heater core.
The heater core can be damaged if too much force is applied to the heater core pipes during hose removal.
  1. Remove the heater module screws and remove the heater module assembly cover. For vehicles equipped with A/C, remove the air conditioning evaporator temperature sensor assembly from the heater and A/C cover.
  2. Remove the heater core screw and clamp.
  3. Remove the hose pipe clamp screw and the hose pipe clamp. Clamp off the heater hoses.

  1. Disconnect the heater hoses from the pipes.
  2. Remove the heater core by carefully pulling it towards you.

  1. Install the heater core and attach the heater hose assembly to the heater hose pipes. Note the following:
    1. Lubricate the heater core pipes with petroleum jelly for ease of installation and to assure a good seal.
    2. Be sure the seals around the heater pipes remain in place when installing.
    3. To verify that the seal is installed correctly, observe the seal from inside the engine compartment. If the seal has leaks, apply a sealer between the heater core pipes and the evaporator housing.
  2. Install the hose pipe clamp and the bolt/screw. Unclamp the heater hoses. Tighten the hose pipe clamp bolt/screw to 16 inch lbs. (1.8 Nm).
  3. Install the heater core clamp and screw. Tighten the screw to 16 inch lbs. (1.8 Nm).
  4. Install the heater module assembly cover and secure with the retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6. Refill the cooling system. Operate the engine and check for leaks, add coolant if necessary.
  7. Install the instrument panel glove compartment.

i have a 97 grand am. it started leaking anti freeze underneath the car. i went under to check it out, and found the heater hose that goes in the heater core was leaking. i tred to get the hose off and the clamp which was a *****. the clamp was right on top. i finally had to cut the hose, and when i tried to get the rest of the hose off, the damn thing broke it was plastic. now i've got a new piece from the pontiac dealer. he said it was metal, because they all leaked sooner or later. my problem is' i can't get the rubber out of the hole. i didn't mention it is nearly impossible to get to. when i stick my finger in the hold it feels like there is something metal in there. i've tried wire hooks. bent needle nose pliers, screw drivers. i just can't get it out. help

Leaking coolant water


This L shaped hose is a drainage for the heater core compartment. Once we removed the panel to the heater core it was obvious the heater core was leaking into this compartment. We changed the heater core out and the problem has been solved :)
