Has the clutch just been replaced? Check for improper clutch pedal free play.

Check for leaks in the hydraulic clutch master,(usually near the brake master cyl) line and slave unit. It may have a bypassing master which sometimes does not leak...if fluid is full and no leaks but slave does not move, check for that.

Clutch pedal snaps all the way to the floor

Your car has a hydraulically operated clutch release system, it has failed, see a local shop to repair it, cost is about $500.00

Clutch pedal travel is excessive. Sits about 2"

A clutch pedal takes MUCH more travel to function correctly, when compared to a brake system...

A clutch needs to be replaced (maybe) when it SLIPS, Chatters, Or fails to release...

Other than that, the clutch will need to be adjusted to allow for total release of the relese bearing when pedal is released, and full disengaugement when pedal is depressed....Have a mechanic look at the adjustement, as proper adjustment gives longer clutch life. This is a periodic adjustment item.

When i turn the key the engine wont turn over but i have power to everything but the motor

is the car a manual transmission or an automatic? if manual there is a switch on the clutch pedal that wont let engine turn over unless clutch is pushed to floor.automatic it is mounted on transmission at the linkage.for auto trans you can move shifter back an forth while trying to crank engine. if manual you can push clutch pedal to floor hard an try to crank.

On my 98 firebird on cold mornings the clutch will not release. i have had a couple people tell me it was the slave cylinder. what do yall think it could be?

Well, there are a number of areas.
By release you can mean the clutch will not disengauge, or the clutch will not grip, after letting off of the pedal...

THE key is exactly how does the clutch FEEL? A slave would feel like more pedal travel, before any clutch depression happens. If you had a slave issue, you would normally be running through fluid.

Not Disengauge...So, yes, you can have slave or m/c issues, but does the pedal depression feel any different? There is a pilot bearing that supports the front end of the trans input shaft. This bearing is often brass and needs lubrication when apart.

If not clutch grab, while releasing the pedal, this can be the hydraulics or a pressure plate issue. If out of adjustment or worn, the pressure plate sometimes will bind on itself and not release, usually releasing suddenly, eventually....Tests would be to release hydraulic pressure, while car is safely on stands, and with qualified assistant.

Clutch wont work

Check and make sure you have fluid in the clutch master cylinder. If it is low fill and check for leaks. Repair leaks as needed and bleed system. If fluid was full check adjustment and bleed system, if there is air in the system pedal will go to the floor.

The clutch pedal goes to floor and wont return

Your car uses what is called a hydraulic clutch, the master or the slave hydraulic cylinder is leaking fluid and you have no pressure in the system, this causes the clutch to go to the floor.

Clutch

believe it or not, the floormat on my 2000 Sunfire will sometimes slip forward and hold the clutch pedal down against the floor. It truly feels like a mechanical problem, but simply pull the floormat away and the pedal pops right back up!
