Unless it has trans fluid all over it,the answer is no.There are not any real big spring in the trans. If it 's operating normally then it did not come from the trans.does it look broken? Most thing you will find in a trans pan is clutch material.

It could be the anti-clunk spring (That's the real name) Check the manual carefully. Without knowing anything other than a 'spring', it's almost impossible to give an accurate answer. Real big--compared to what? What shape?, compressiion or torsion?

Should there be any play in the serpentine belt on 1998 sunfire

Almost none, the spring in your tensioner arm has left the building if you have play. I said the spring, not the pulley tensioner pulley itself. You need to replace the whole arm, sold at parts stores.

I have a 1998 Pontiac Sunfire coupe. The car runs amazing has alot of get up and go but the transmission seems to slip alot while making turns, or at complete stops. it does leak fluid alot. I'm curious as...

it sound to me that the tranny needs to be resealed that the seals and gaskets are worn. There are many places the tranny fluid can come out of like where the front axles go into the tranny or the front seal or the pan gasket

How much would it cost to fix a crack in the transmission pan for a 1998 pontiac sunfire sedan (rough estimate), does this also mean the transmission is going?

It would probably be best to get one from a salvage yard instead, because enough force to cause a crack, is also enough force to warp it. But assuming you have no choice, most shops would probably charge about an hour, at a $75 per hour shop rate, plus the 6 quarts or so of AFT they need to replace, and $10 for a new gasket. They would probably braze it instead of welding, since it is not strength related.

Where is the transmission dipstick on 1998 Pontiac Sunfire?

This model doesn't have a trans dipstick. To check trans fluid level there is a plug on the right side/passenger side above the transmission pan about 2 to 3 inches. The plug has an 11 or 12 mm head on it. Remove this plug while vehicle is running and at operating temperature if fluid comes out of the where the plug was then the level is adequate. To add transmission fluid there is a red or black plastic cap on top of the transmission on the driver side. You will need a transmission funnel to add to it if fluid is need.
