Disconnect the fuel filter at both ends to see if the filter is clogged. If you are not getting any fuel on either end then you should get a new fuel pump.

Hard to start, engine dies on higher rpm

Hard to start and stall at higher RPM. So you are stalling at load. What the engine needs at higher RPM and load is more fuel. The fuel pressure at idle should be at 30 psi to 45 psi. A plugged fuel filter will also do this. so you need to address the fuel pump and filter

I think it is the cam sensor that is in the distributor. Not serviceable except as whole distributor. Get from Import Experts for $200 on ebay.

My 1998 Mercury Villager will not stay running. Replaced fuel filter first. Fuel pump had a bad wire, fuse was blown. Fixed both and van still won't stay running.

Maybe a bad fuel pump. Is it humming niormally in the fuel tank?

Will it start for a few seconds? Need more info.

Where is the fuel filter on a 1997 mercury villager located and how did change it

  • Relieve the pressure in the fuel system by first removing the engine compartment relay panel cover on the left side. Then, remove the fuel pump relay from the relay pane and start the engine. Let it idle until it stalls, and then crank the engine for about 5 seconds to make sure the pressure was released. Turn the ignition off.

Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise and support the Mercury Villager. Remove the fuel hose clamps, and then disconnect and plug the hoses to prevent them from leaking fuel. Take the fuel filter out of the bracket.

  • 3

Install the new filter in the bracket with the arrow pointing toward the engin in direction that fuel flows through the system. Connect the fuel hoses to the new filter. Put on the hose clamps and tighten them. Make sure they are properly tightened so there are no fuel leaks, and that pressure is maintained at about 36 in-lbs.

Lower the vehicle and reconnect the negative battery cable. Start the engine of your Mercury Villager, and check for leaks. Make repairs if necessary.

1998 Mercury Villiager stalls out when put into gear also at red lights unless it has been running for over 15 minutes?

I suspect your fast idle control is not working. Could be solenoid. Mounted on throttle body.

clean the throttle body passages and clean the MAF sensor with carb cleaner. disconnect battery for 2 hours to clear memory in computer, drive for 10 miles to relearn, may run rough for 10 miles.
