No, All fixed orifice tube systems (yours) cycle the a/c compressor on and off as needed. At 70 degrees F, it should cycle about 4 times/minute. The hotter it gets, the longer it stays on.
You may need to replace the cycling switch on top of the receiver dryer. Cheap repair.

If the system runs all the time, you will ice up your evaporator.

You could have an a/c clutch with improper air gap. Did they replace just the compressor? Or the compressor and clutch assembly? Have them check air gap and adjust it.

  • A/C Always On
  • Circuitry short/open.
  • Damaged A/C cycling switch.
  • Damaged A/C control.
  • Damaged powertrain control module.
  • GO to Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis Manual.
  • Improper A/C clutch air gap.
  • GO to Section 12-03C

Section 12-03C: Compressor and Clutch — FS-10 1996 Town Car, Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis Workshop Manual
  1. Measure air gap between A/C clutch and A/C clutch pulley mating surfaces in three equally spaced locations with a feeler gauge. Record the measurements.
  2. If each of the three measurements taken is not within 0.35-0.85 mm (0.014-0.033 inch), remove the A/C clutch (2884) as outlined in this section.
  3. Remove and measure the A/C clutch hub spacer (19D648). Select the appropriate thickness A/C clutch hub spacer to place the air gap within specified limits.
  4. Install A/C clutch hub spacer and A/C clutch as outlined in this section. Recheck air gap measurement.

I provided a lot more information than murpheybanton, including how to adjust the air gap, which I think is your issue. But, you gave him a better rating. What gives???

I have a 2002 dodge stratus r/t coupe (mitsubishi) with the 3.0L 24valve V6, and auto transmission. Lately the A/C will operate normally sometimes, and sometimes it will not blow cold due to the compressor...

The hvac relay is located in the power distribution box under the hood in position #60. You can swap another 5 terminal relay to test. You did not say what your pressure readings were, but you could have a bit of moisture or a little air trapped in the system causing the intermittent operation. To eliminate this, have the system evacuated with a deep vacuum, then recharged to mfrs. capacity. I hope this helps.

AC comes on, then shuts down before car is cooled. Compressor activates and blows cool air for about 15 seconds then shuts down.

Low on R134a, you need to have the system recharged. Try to stay away from the do it your self kit that most Auto Parts store carry.
Below are normal car AC pressure readings with 134A

Normal readings on high and low side with AC OFF (static pressure) – Depends on outside temperature, but normally is between 80-105 PSI

Normal low side reading with AC on high speed and MAX & engine at 800-1000 RPM’s – Ranges from 25-35 PSI

Normal high side reading ranges from 200-350 PSI

Don’t assume that if adding little Freon is good that adding a lot is better! Overcharging just a little can decrease the performance of the system and possibly damage the compressor.

Thank you for using fixya and good luck.

Need fan belt diagram for 95 toyota landcruzer

My 95 land cruiser A/C is good sometimes for 2-3 hrs cold only and then compressor stop on my way from San Jose to Las Vegas trip. Again back to normal cold on the next day and back again with same routine problem. I check the compressor at 35psi normal and no leak. 1. Is that the compressor relay problem? 2. Where is the location or box of the relay switch compressor ? 3. What is the standard thermostat temp. for my truck? 4. What is the difference using lower temp and std. temp. thermostat? My temp. goes up even w/o A/C and then goes back to normal again. My solutions: 1. I installed new water pump , coolant, belts and radiator caps. Do you have any suggestion or remedy to my problem. Thank you and more power to the Auto Doctor.

Is it normal that A/C compressor clutch work sometimes andstopped

If you have auto air the clutch on the compressor will cut on and off as the inside temp of car change.normal.

If the system isn't cooling good the clutch will cycle on and off if it is low on freon.

How to put on a/c compressor

I would refer you to a Haynes or Chilton auto repair manual to find your a/c compressor. It is normally on top of your motor to the left side and has normally a couple of 1 and half inch to 2 inch hoses with pressed hydraulic lines feeding into it. If you are looking for a replacement has cheap replacement parts for your BMW. I hope this information helps you!
