Question about 1996 Volkswagen Jetta

1 Answer

Car Wont Start straight away.

Hi.

My Car (Golf MK3 GTi 1996 Model) takes 5 to 6 tries in the morning to start, the starter will turn but the engine will not start. Round about the 4th try the engine will start then die, that will happen +/-3 times then the Car will start. Once the car is idling I will try accelerate a bit and the RPM will drop and the car will cut out.

Sometimes after driving the car for a while if I stop at a shop or something I will need a Jump start from another Cars battery, This takes some time to start the car then as well.

The car’s RPM will also go Up by themselves after this, they will go high then low and after about a minute will stabilize so that I may drive again.

What could be the Problem, I have brand new Battery and Spark Plugs.

Regards
Rob

my first solution would be to check all the timing is set up properly and you will probably find that the distributor is not timed up right

SOURCE: VW Golf engine rattle

You are experiencing detonation. Main causes are:

  • Low octane fuel - Use higher octane rating fuel.
  • Incorrect ignition timing - Readjust timing
  • Too high compression ratio(due to engine mods such as skimmed head or high compression pistons) - replace modified parts
  • Air/fuel mix too lean - Replace fuel filter and readjust.

Did you resolve this?
I drive a mk3 golf GTI 8V and mine starts fine but after driving for about 3 minutes (engine warms up) it starts to misfire, the car stalls and then you can't start it again until the engine has cooled. Does this sound similar?

thats because the car is not at operating temperature.you will get a slight drop in power and drivability until its warm.do not try to use any more than 1/3rd gas pedal until its warm anyway.your car has an automatic cold start device (choke)that operates when the car is cold.

GOLF MK3 NON START

check for 12v at injector plug if no 12v this is fed from the ecu so backtrack all fuses and ecu feeds
you may need new ecu control unit but be sure to check all 12v feeds and earths etc

My car wont start

if it starts and cuts out straight away. it is most likely an immobilizer problem. an electronic diagnostic test would pin point the problem as it would store afault in the memory.

VW GOLF MK3 GTI 8v starting problems

My mk3 1996 16v 2ltr was playing up, wouldnt start when cold, wouldnt rev above 4500-5000. I changed the ignition switch, ecu relay, petrol pump relay, plugs, plug leads, coil, and finally, checked the hall sender on the dizzy, and found a broken wire in the dizzy body. Got a 2nd hand dizzy from a breakers for 40 quid, (150 or more new) and all is well. (I actually took the car to two garages and they couldnt find the problems, no faults registered on vagcom).

I have a vw golf gti. P reg 1996. recently it has

Hi Frank
If as you say....Nothing is happening at all when you turn the key, you appear to have one of two problems. A faulty starter motor--or--- A faulty ignition switch. If you can tap the starter motor while another person keeps the key turned to the start position, and the engine now starts you now know it is a starter problem. When doing this PLEASE MAKE SURE THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF GEAR.
If it should start up, or even engage the starter motor while IN GEAR, serious injuries could happen, and I do not mean to your car.
Good luck
John
