Question about 2000 Chevrolet S-10

2000 V6 S10 - Won't start when hot...must cool down

I have a 2000 V6 S10 Xtreme that runs perfect until you turn it off when it's hot and try to start it again. Open the hood and let it cool down and it starts right up. Runs great otherwise.

Thanks for the response about a possible starter problem, but the engine cranks when hot, just won't kick over. The check engine light has come on and I just replaced the gas cap hoping it would go off . Both the CEL and the "Hot Start" problem happened around the same time.

Haven't had any diagnostics done yet to get a code. I just read in another forum that Autozone does this for free. Is that true or is it worth buying the meter myself?

One more question, I just bought the truck 2 weeks ago as a toy and it runs just below 210 degrees on the dash gauge. When the thermostat opens (I assume) it drops to about 150 degrees and works its' way back up. What temperature should it be running around?

Try putting a heat shield between your starter and engine. Chevrolet is know for failing starters when their hot.

When its hot and wont start is it that it wont crank over or will it crank over but wont start?

4.3 TBI AT. Won't turn over when it's at operating temp. Turns over and starts after ten-minute cool down.

Sounds like your starter might be going out.  Sometimes when they start to go bad they will not start properly when they are hot.  When you give it time to cool down it will start right back up.  The other thing it could be would be a coil pack because they will do the same thing but I would think if it was the pack that you would have problems with it shutting down while you were running.  Take the starter to your auto parts store and have them test it several times to simulate being hot and see what they say.  Let me know if you have any other questions.  Thanks for rating my response and for using FixYa!

I would definitely check out the coil pack then and see if that's the problem.  you can get them both check at your local auto parts store but I would bet it is one or the other of them!  What is the code coming off the CEL?  That would help a lot!

They do it for free and will check your coil pack and starter for free as well.

Try this site. They give color codes and detailed info. If you have one bulb that does both, running and stop lights, then simple wiring to colors should correct the proble. If you have two bulbs, one for brake and one for turn signal, you must use a converter. Otherwise, it feeds back to whatever you are wired to.
