Question about 1995 Lexus ES 300

2 Answers

Electrical issue I have 96 Lexus ES300 and when you run the air conditioner or defrost at all. It dies, the battery loses all power and you have to jump it for a long time.. We have tried changing the battery, and the battery terminals, and still the problem persists. Is it worth fixing or is this gonna cost me more than I paid for the car?

It sounds like either your battery is going bad or your alternator is not charging the battery correctly. Here are a couple of suggestions. Get a voltmeter and set it on DC volts. Measure the voltage across the battery terminals when the car is turned off. It should be around 12 volts. Turn the car on and re-measure the voltage. You should see it increase by roughly 2 to 3 volts. So you should measure around 14.5 volts. If you don't see a significant increase in the voltage it's means your alternator is probably bad. If the voltage increases too much, say >16 volts, it means your voltage regulator may be bad and you may be overcharging the battery. However, that doesn't sound like the case here. You can remove your battery and bring it into most auto parts stores and they will check it for free. With a little more work you can also bring your alternator in and they will check it for free. If you do the work yourself the battery may cost you ~$70 and the alternator around $140. If you pay someone to do the work it will probably cost about twice as much. If you end up replacing the alternator it's probably worth it to replace the serpentine belt at the same time. That would add another $10.

Sounds like a bad alternator, charge battery, check voltage without car running (should be around12v) start engine (voltage should be between 13.50- 14.5v) , check and make sure alternator belt is ok also.

96 lexus ES300 is losing fuel efficiency, what would be the cause?

Check the spark plug leads and spark plug, it may be putting too much fuel in the engine and not enough spark or power to ignite it leading to lower economic driving, also make sure you get the timing checked as this can set it off.

Make sure there is no black smoke coming out of the engine. It will be losing a slight amount of power from somewhere where it is either combustion related or even something simple like the aircon unit.

Your not running with A/C on? this saps enough power from the car

Water leaking from underneath 1999 Lexus ES300

If it is clear water and your air conditioner is running, it is water from the evaporator which is normal.
If it is not clear, it could be coolant from the cooling system.

'96 Lexus ES300 - a/c not blowing cold air. Took to car place and had freon added. Shortly after leaving, I noticed that it was not blowing cool air. I hear the compressor running, but not blowing cool...

There has to be a leak in the system. Look at the sight glass coming up from the condenser- is the refrigerant low (many bubble). If there is a leak there is a sniffer they use in the shop the detect where it is.
