Ok guys, what would cause an alternator to put out 17+ volts. blew up 1st battery, changed alt. and battery. blew second battery with a picknpull alt. third times a charm? yea right. brand new alt. and battery still reading 17+ volts at idle. heading for new relays. My question is ... any voltage control in the ECU????
The ECU has no control on the voltage. Does your vehicle have a separate voltage regulator? If so that's your fault. A lot of alternators have the regulator built into them. The alternator needs to be put on a test rig away from the vehicle and the output tested, this will eliminate the vehicle, You could disconnect the wiring to the alternator, run three fly leads to the alternator and to a separate battery and run the engine and test the voltage on the spare battery. Wire 1: Battery neg to case of alternator Wire 2: Battery pos to + terminal on alt (the thick wire) Wire 3: Battery pos through a 5 watt bulb to the ind terminal (ignition light) 17 volt will blow another battery for sure.

its possiblly a diode in the alternator faulty.your best bet is to get an auto electrician
SOURCE: not able to get any
I've seen a handful of vehicles over the years where the jumper cables were accidentally hooked up backwards, even for a split second, and the damage done has ranged from none [other than some nasty sparks] to severe where the engine/transmission computer were damaged by the reversed polarity. Because you're unable to read any data via the OBDII connector I would suspect either a blown fuse or fuses or a damaged computer. I'd check all the fuses first then if things still don't work you may have to have a service facility do some further testing to see what is working and what isn't as far as computer inputs/outputs are concerned. Sorry that I don't have an easy fix for you but hope this helps a little bit!
SOURCE: alternator charges at 14.4volts, replaced regulator, same result. boils battery.
The max charge voltage is usually around 14.5 volts, so 14.4 is not high.
Its possible the battery has a dead cell and that is causing the acid problem.
You might want to check with the dealer on what the max voltage is for your car.

may hav burn a shift solenoid--put car on a scanner--local parts place does it for free--nomerical codes will show and explained in a manual--but bfore replacin a part a more detailed scan shud b performed
