There is not a tensioner on this model vehicle. They use a elastic type belt that stretches and goes over the pulleys and glide it over. There is a BMW special tool to not damage the belt as it goes on but can also use a screwdriver or pry bar to ease it on.
You have to jack up and jump from starter or open thunk, remove wires from trunk lamp and trickle charge battery through thoes wires. 2 amp only. Takes a while
I have not looked at a current 5-series, but the traditional place for a BMW battery is beneath the plastic tray on the right-hand side of the trunk. If you don't find it there, perhaps they have moved it to beneath the rear seat where the 5-series used to have it back in the 1980s.
I understand that the new 5-series uses the same approach that Mercedes has used for some time. That is, they use electronic memory rather than mechanical stops to tell the windows, sunroof, seats, mirrors, etc. where the end-points are. That means it is a chore to reset the stops on everything if the battery gets disconnected. Best to avoid that problem by attaching another battery to the jumper cable points under the hood to keep the car powered up while you have your battery out.
If you are working on the air bags, then you have to power down the system, so far as I know, so you will need the owner's manual to give you instructions on how to re-set everything that has a memory.
