Question about 1988 Toyota 4Runner
Battery is new
Started having issues a bout every 30-40 starts, when it occured I had to turn the key a couple of more times and it would turn over. No clicking or anything. It then got progressively worse, every 10 starts, then 5, then every start. It got to the point where I would have to take a bar and tap the starter to get it to turn over.
So I had the starter swapped out and everything was OK. Changed starter/solenoid only, no batt cables etc.
Approx 60 days after the swap it started doing the same thing, getting progressively worse and now I am back to tapping the starter w/ every other start.
This leads me to believe that it is more then a starter issue.
OR I have back luck w/ starters and I got a bad one.
I just went out and swapped the neg cable to no effect, store was out of pos cables so that will have to wait.
Any help would be appreciated.
I have had my 88 4runner for 20 years and i have had the same problem with mine! Also another person that i know of. They is NO starter relay on a 88 4runner i was told by the dealer. I have put in many rebuilt starters over the years. I finally went to the dealer and bought one , and guess what,,,,,,,,IT DID THAT SAME THING. After about a month or less of starting OK it does it again. So this is NOT a starter issiue. I got so pissed out about this that i let the truck sit for 3 1/2 years.... But i can tell you it will start almost everytime in the morning. Then CLICK , CLICK , and if you click it really fast enough times it might start.. So there you go , If you have had this problem and solved this issiue please let me know as this really has SUCKED for me as i do love this 4runner,,...

Starters are a piece of cake to rebuild. Look for clicker fixer kits or starter kit on ebay. With the new starter going out so soon I would say you got a bad part or you have a bad starter relay but if it got better at first with the new starter I would say that that is your problem.

You should take the starter to the parts store and have it tested, if their is a problem with the starter itself they can tell you and what is wrong.........hope this helps.
