I opened my tank and noticed that there was a broken cable on the cables that read fuel gauge. I joined it back and my gauge came up and it's working.

On the e36 its very common for the fuel level resistor to pack up. This is found on the fuel sender unit.

To gain access to this you need to remove the rear seat base and possibly a metal plate on the offside (right rear passenger). This will give you access to the upper part of the fuel tank. You'll then find a large retainer in which you will need a special tool to remove ... or a flat bladed screwdriver and hammer to gently tap it loose and unscrew. Disconnect the fuel lines but keep the connector on if possible (or reconnect after sender removed) and lift up the sender seated on the fuel tank. You can now see the fuel level seat (a black plastic piece) attached to small metal pipe connecting to the resistor. By moving the fuel level seat up and down you should notice the fuel level gauge on the instrument cluster go up and down respectively (need ignition on). Hopefully this should determine the cause for your problem.

I'm not sure if the resistor comes seperate on these or if the sender has to be bought complete.

Hope this helps!

Town and Country Van running out of gas and guage says half a tank what could be the problem?

If your fuel gauge is showing you in accurate readings this is normal to all vehicles that are not used to fill-up gas full regularly but sometimes the cause of the inacuracy is due to faulty float valve in the gas tank you need to replace it

My fuel gauge is stuck on half i need to locate my fuel filter

This could be the instrument cluster or more likely the sending unit has gone bad. The sending unit is located in the tank and is part of the fuel pump assembly. It is a fairy intensive job. A normal shop will charge around 600-700 dollars to fix this. It may be easier to reset the mileage counter every time you fill up and then always fill up before the 250 mile marker. I hope this helps!

The fuel gauge sits on empty when the tank is full. I have checkd fuses and they are good (used a multi meter).

It's most likely a failed sending unit in the tank (it's not that uncommon). It's attached to the pump assembly. Replace the fuel sender and you should be good to go.

My gas gauge fluctuates

The fuel pump and sending unit are one piece and are located inside the fuel tank. They are notorious for trouble and when one goes out, the other follows.

Fuel gauge registers empty after fill up

It sounds to me like you have a short in your wiring harness at you fuel tank. there is a plug on top of your fuel tank that controls you fuel pump and your sending unit that tells you how much fuel is in the tank. This plug can be a real p.i.a to get to on some vehicles, you may have to take the vehicle to a shop to fix it, if you are not mechanically inclined.

Fuel gauge stop working

Most likely your problem is the fuel sending unit in the fuel tank mounted with the fuel pump assy. The symptoms might let the gauge sit on or work intermittently then is goes to empty. DON'T let the dealer tell you its only replacable by changing the whole fuel assy.(400.00). This is not true. Look up your vehicle on the AC Delco web site at the top of the page click the link for part look up, it will ask you the year, style, eng size, etc. then you look at fuel , the part is actually called TBI Fuel Meter. If your truck is a 5.7 your part is #17113274 (around $100.00). This is a actual GM part number, some are the AC Delco part number that may have 2 letters and 4 digits, the dealer can cross reference it or order the AC Delco part. This kit comes with a new wiring harness, and instructions. Having said this the other symptom you may have is the gauge goes past full, this is because of a bad ground, most likely around fuel tank. I have replaced approx 6 of these sensors in GM vehicles( 2 of the same year and make as yours) in the last year, its cheap design lets it fail easily.

Fuel Gauge always shows empty

see if there is any acces to the fuel tank cover under the rear seat, if it is then remove the screws and remove the sending unit sending unit inside the tank most likelly it will be bad, but if you don't feel like doing it, then take it to your mechanic but seems to be the sending unit inside the tank wich is the sensor trigering your gage is not good and need to be tested and replaced
