Its now started doing a ticking noise when trying to start the car? could this be the alternator?? Also could it be a short in the battery cables terminals? Thanks for your help but we have also fixed the dome light by fixing our door.

If the dome light was on all night, puill the fuse for that accessory or remove the dome light bulb to prevent the short in the swich. You may need a new dome light switch that is located in the pillar of the hinged area door jamb. It is a plumger type switch that screws in the metal pillar between the door hinges

When starting did the starter turn while it was ticking? The solenoid will click if bad or if it has a bad connection

Ford products have a remote solenoid unlike GM & Chrysler vehicles. The battery cable will lead you to the location of yours which should be mounted somewhere on the inner fender skirt. The battery cables connections may have corrosion and need to be cleaned. Also a smaller wire is attached to the solenoid and may need cleaning as well. Alway disconnect to battery ground before putting a wrench on a positive wire. The solenoid may be shorting out. You can jump a solenoid if you know what your doing although its not recommended to a novice. A fire can start easily. Solenoids are fairly cheap compared to a starter. $25 would be a fair amount to pay for one

I have a 1999 ford windstar and it will not start. I had the alternator replaced and started fine. Now it will not start it just clicks. we changed the battery and still the dame thing. Please help!

It sounds like you either have a bad starter motor, or you are not getting any power to your starter moor. Check your battery connections to make sure they are all tight. Also check your connections on your alternator. If all of your connections are tight and you have power getting to your starter then chances are you are going to need a new starter motor. I hope this helps you out...

How do I take out a starter motor from a Ford

10 chances to 1 the starter is not your problem. Try this, turn on the headlights, hit the starter. If the lights go out, then look at the soleniod an the All the connections. If the lights stay on,replace the starter. Another thing. Hold it in start mode for 20 seconds, then check for heat at all connections. Could get a burn doing this, but think of the bucks you saved!

Wiring problems

The ground usually goes through the bracket, as the engine has a ground wire. Do you have the field connector connected? Can you read at voltage on the alternator with the engine running?

1981 ford fairmont electrical

Looks like you have replaced all of the key parts, and then some. At this point I would verify that the alternator is charging the battery. With engine off, check battery voltage. Start the engine and check thre voltage again. It should climb to charging voltage, around 13.0 to 13.5 volts. If it doesn't, check all connections. On a vehicle this old, I would start with the ground circuits.
Good luck.

Car clicks but want start. i had the starter tested(fine).

Usually a clicking is from a dead battery. Have you had the battery tested? If it is good, check the battery connections to make sure they are not corroded and/or loose. After that, the next step would be to check the alternator.
