Rear brake shoe replacement on a 98 chevy 3500 dually

If you have drums on the rer yes you do have to remove the axle its simple though you unbolt the 6-8 bolts on the end of the axle then it just simply slides out thats it there mite be some resistance but there isnt anything else holding it in. and you dont have to worry about putting it back into the same spot eather just slide it back in and line up the drum.

Did 1989 Chevy trucks have asbestos brake shoes in the rear (no guessing, need to know for sure and find documentation)

vehicles of this age would have been fitted as original with asbestos lined shoes with little bits of copper wire like stuff in them for sure ,but a 20 yr old vehicle would surely have had a least one brake reline

1989 chevy 3500 4x4 454 rear brake drum removal. Does the axle bolts need to be removed

Can you tell me which type of axle you have?

Full Floating Axles To remove the drums from full floating rear axles, use the Axle Shaft Removal & Installation procedure in Section 7. Full floating rear axles can readily be identified by the bearing housing protruding through the center of the wheel.

Semi-Floating Axles
  1. Raise and support the rear end on jack stands.
  2. Remove the wheel.
  3. Pull the drum from the brake assembly. If the brake drums have been scored from worn linings, the brake adjuster must be backed off so that the brake shoes will retract from the drum. The adjuster can be backed off by inserting a brake adjusting tool through the access hole provided. In some cases the access hole is provided in the brake drum. A metal cover plate is over the hole. This may be removed by using a hammer and chisel.

You may have to back off the automatic adjuster before you can pull the drum from the brake assembly

To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Should all 4 brake pads be the same size on a 1988 chevy 30 rear end?

No disc brakes back there...front shoes are usually about 1/4" inch shorter than rears. if they appear to be the same size it's possible that two fronts have been used on one side.etc. It likely wouldn't hurt anything but shouldn't be that way.

You should be able to just slack the brakes off and pull the drum. They aren't heavy.

My 1989 chevy 1 ton truck has no brakes, the shoes are new, lines are bled , master cylinder tests good, but no pedal at all

check the anti lock solinoid to the rear brakes, it has a valve and a resiviour in it, it is in the line to the rear brakes, usually the valve or diaphram goes bad, easiest way to check it is to bypass with a piece of brake line
