Everytime it missfires the unburned fuel will be burned in the catalytic converter. Hopefully you can get it tuned up before the cat. conv. is ruined. Plugs, wires, coils etc. While the plugs are out run a compression test . Look at plugs for oil fouling at that age valve stem seals sure could be an issue and feeding oil into the exhaust system fire you have going on.

Someone would need to check fuel pressure at the injectors among other things. If the check engine light is on you should have the computer checked for trouble codes too.
Could be several things related to the fuel system.

1999 Jetta starts but misses then cuts off let it sit and it will start again. I smelled rotten eggs and replalaced cat.converter and oxy sensor it still misses and cuts off. Could the injectors be...

There is a test that can be done called a smoke test. Only a few good garages will have invested in the equipment, but if you cannot find the air leak this tool will. It blows dry smoke into the engine and allows you to see where the air leak is.
Another more basic way of finding the air leak is to spray a light oil like wd40 around the intake manifold. If the revs go up you will have found your leak.
Dosed rubber hoses with hairline cracks are hard to find but either one of the above methods should help to identify the problem area.

Catalytic converter stopped up. Pipes got red hot. Replaced Cat. Conv. car runs good, then started random misfires, pipes got red hot again. What is exhaust part that is downstream of Cat. Conv. could it...

If the exhaust system was plugged the engine wont run, normally. It will start and idle until the back pressure is such that it can't take in more air/fuel mixture and then stall.

After the converter, there may be a resonator, and then the muffler. Is any exhaust flowing out of the tail pipe? You might try hooking up a scanner and see what your oxygen sensor(s) is/are doing.
Also, scan the MAF(mass air flow) sensor assembly.
Sound like the engine can't breathe, and its getting to much fuel.

I've code p430 and p1000 and it said something about air gas controller

Catalitic converter mailfunction. Possible causes: - catalitic conv. mailfunction - o2 sensor mailfunction (ECU generates p430 from converter pre and post sensors data) - misfire; bad quality petrol, bad spark plugs, bad ignition coils (misfire means cat conv able to burn out without quick repair) - low fuel pressure: petrol filter needs replace, fuel pump needs replace - hole in exhaust system (sensors are ok, but measure wrong flow)

1995 Jetta: vacumn hoses missing causing car to miss...

A missing vacuum line will not cause a car to misfire, it will run rough because of un-metered air entering the intake system. A misfire could be from bad spark plugs and wires. A malfunctioning ignition system, a bad fuel injector or fuel pressure charging component. An end result for not correcting a misfire problem is a damaged catalytic converter. From the factory it should come with a vacuum routing label usually on top of the radiator carrier or hood locking system. It will tell you specific location for the vacuum lines.

Fuel injectors or Distributor Cap?

the blinking CEL light is an indication of a miss-fire, run the code retrival test to find out what cylinder is the one missing, at your miles it could be almost anything from a low compression issue to a bad distributor cap, a fuel injector could be the problem, run the test and get back to me, Kragen and other chain parts stores will test the system for codes for FREE!
