Sound like, either the universal couplings (they need to be lubricated every once in a while or they seize) or maybe the bearings.

Range rover 4.6 problem is electrical transmission system it does not engage gears what could be the problem

My 1997 model had a fuse that controlled the transfer case. You could take the fuse out when having the vehicle towed. It was in the fuse box under the right seat.
Could also be a problem with the BCM -body computer which controls the transmission functions including starting in park or neutral.

This is going to sound a bit far-fetched, but I've had a similar problem with a '93 discovery... Turns out the problem was water in fuel tank.

I have a clonking noise on my p38 range rover when i go from forward to reverse and vice versa the noise is irritating and always does it 2-3 times

Clang
WHERE: Under the center of the car or truck, near the middle.
WHEN: Starting off at traffic lights. Most often heard on pickups with automatic transmissions, not manuals.
WHAT: The splines that allow the driveshaft to change length where it connects to the tailshaft are binding as you slow down and then releasing when you start off.
URGENCY: Annoying, but They All Do That--or at least some of them do it some of the time.
FIX: Packing the spline area with special grease helps for a month or so. Or just sell the car or truck.
