Question about 1991 Ford F250

1 Answer

E4OD starts in 2nd or 3rd when cold

1991 F250, 460 with e4od. The trans wants to start me out in 2nd or third when cold. After it warms up it shifts like a dream from first. I've been just parking it on a hill so I can get it rolling, by the time I get to town (7m) everything is fine. I have a spare trans in the garage but was told it may be a problem with the shift module and swapping the trans won't help. What are your suggestions? I have done fluid and filter on it regularly and the problem started after letting it set for a few weeks and having the flywheel changed.

The E4OD is a complicated tranny and unfortunately prone to many problems. There are three shift controlling solenoids inside the tranny mounted to the valve body. Without being able to actually drive to evaluate it makes it very hard to give you a starting point for trouble shooting. I have rebuilt many of the E4OD transmissions over the years and found them prone to many problems. That's why Ford quit using them. A tranny shop can hook up to two different line pressure ports to evaluate the problem. But, be warned they are going to recomend a rebuilt be installed. You will be looking at around $ 3300.00 dollars for the rebuilt unit.

I have a 94 Ford f150 that drives in first but revs high until it hits 2nd gear then drives normal is my tranny slipping

chances are that you have an E4OD transmission. It a good transmission, however it's electronically controlled (the E, in E4OD). What this means is that many things outside of the transmission itself can cause the transmission to act up. First thing's first... ensure that your fluid level is sufficient. Then, click the link below to read the thread about the E4OD diagnosis process. good luck.

Just had both o2 sensors replaced and now the truck won't shift from 2nd to 3rd gear. Evidently it had been slipping a bit before but now it won't shift into 3rd at all. The tranny is an E4OD......

O2 Sensors --- not related to shifting

New transmissions --- are only new once
When installed on the assy line

Has to be rebuilt if necessary

PO 147 ---O2 Sensor Heater (Bank 1 Sensor 3) don't have one of those
PO714 -- Trans Temp Sensor -heat for the slipping
PO 471 --- Exhaust Pressure Sensor -don't have that either

Need a new guy
Not very professional were they

1992 Ford Bronco Transmission Problems (E4OD)

Here is what code E40D is:
TRANSMISSION - E40D - DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES - WATER INTRUSION OF THE MLP/TR SENSOR
TRANSMISSION - E40D - POSSIBLE WATER INTRUSION INTO THE MLP/TR SENSOR CAUSING SHIFT CONCERNS AND/OR HARSH ENGAGEMENT CONCERNS
TRANSMISSlON - E40D - SHIFT CONCERNS AND/OR HARSH ENGAGEMENT CONCERNS DUE TO WATER INTRUSION OF THE MLP/TR SENSOR
1989-94 BRONCO, ECONOLINE, F-150-350 SERIES, F-47, F-53, F-59
here is possible fix:
ISSUE: Some vehicles may exhibit a shift concern and/or a harsh engagement concern due to water intrusion into the MLP/TR sensor and vehicle harness. There may also be a number of different DTC's along with those concerns.
ACTION: Replace the MLP/TR sensor and vehicle harness connector if signs of water is evident.

My 1988 F150 automatic won't shift down when i go to stop.

CHECK THE VEHICLE SPEED SENSORS. ONE IS IN THE REAR END ON TOP OF THE DIFFERENTIAL, AND THE OTHER IS ON THE TRANS. HOPE YOU DON'T HAVE A E4OD TRANS. THEY ARE JUNK.

That is a lot of miles on the tranny. Being a Ford it probably has the E4OD tranny. The E4OD has several clutch packs in side. Sounds as though your direct drive clutch pack has gone out. Also the torque converter has a lock up mechanisim in side which may have given up the ghost . This tranny has improved over the years from the origional version. But, this tranny needs frequent service if towing a heavy trailer. Once the fluid gets burned it needs to be changed immediately or problems will result if you let it go and try to change later. Just to purchase a rebuilt if it is a E4OD will be around $3400.00. If you want to rebuild it the parts cost for just a basic kit will be around $900.00 to do it correctly. There are many hard parts to check for tolerances internally. By hard parts I am referring to sun and planetary gears and what not. I hope this has helped. I have rebuilt many Ford trannys over the years and the E4OD can be problematic at times. The newer versions are more reliable.
