I am trying to locate the o2 sensor that is before the catalytic converter on my 98 olds bravada 6 cyl. I found one that is on the exhaust pipe just down from the exhaust manifold, but isn't there one on the manifold itself?

Bank #1 sensor #2 is the sensor located after the catalytic convertor. While sensor #1, which is located before the catalytic converter, is used to control the vehicle's fuel strategy, sensor #2 is used to monitor catalytic converter efficiency.
If you can locate the catalytic converter the front O2 sensor , referred to as sensor 1 or S1 , is located in the inlet pipe for the catalytic converter , 6" to 12" upstream. The rear sensor , referred to as sensor 2 or S2 , is located in the outlet pipe , 6" to 12" downstream. The exact distance from the catalytic converter varies by engine type , i.e , 2.O liter ,1.8 Turbo
O2 sensor are located before and after Catalytic Converter ( exhaust system of your car).
If you car's engine is 4 cyl you have 2 O2 sensors and if you car's engine is 6 cyl then you have 4 O2 sensors ( for each bank, 2 for left bank and 2 for right bank).
Hope it helps and comment if you need more advice.
Please don't forget to rate the answer it helps with my ratings, thanks!
B1 means the sensor is located on the same bank of the engine that has the #1 cylinder. B2 is located on the opposite bank.
S1 means the sensor is located BEFORE the catalytic converter
S2 means the sensor is located AFTER the catalytic converter
You didn't say which engine you have, so I've included the diagrams of both 4 cyl and 6 cyl so you can see the banks
Bank 1 sensor 1
Bank 2 sensor 1
Bank 1 sensor 2
Bank 2 sensor 2
some manufacturers use a kind of shorthand that reads different, but means the same thing:
Sensor 1/1 or O2s 1/1
Sensor 2/1 or O2s 2/1
Sensor 1/2 or O2s 1/2
Sensor 2/2 or O2s 2/2
Bank 1 is always the side of the engine where cylinder number 1 is located and, of coarse, Bank 2 is the opposite side.
On a 4 cylinder engine, there is only 1 bank and it is always referred to as Bank 1.
Sensor 1 is always the upstream sensor (The one located BEFORE the catalytic converter)
Sensor 2 is always the downstream sensor (the one that is located AFTER the catalytic converter.
Most GM engines have #1 cylinder located on the left bank, (or Driver's Side) of the engine,
So, the answer to your question would be that you are looking for the sensor located before the catalytic converter on the right (or Passenger Side) of the truck.
O2 Bank 2 sensor 1 is on the drivers side before the catalytic.
Bank 2 sensor 2 is after the catalytic
Bank 1 sensor 1 is on the passenger side before the catalytic
Bank 1 sensor 2 is after the catalytic
Good luck and keep ma posted. be glad to help
