Question about 1992 Toyota Tercel
My alternator belt broke on 1992 toyota tercel, can't find diagram or instructions on how to replace. I have a Chilton manual but it is generic and covers several years. I have also looked on line but again I find generic solutions and no diagram
OK, you probably should have a lift if it is not on top. If on top, then you are in luck. Here we go...
Before you disconnect the battery, make sure you have a memory saver which connects to your OBDII connector, or you have the security code for your radio or you don't care if you lose all you memories on your radio AND there is no security code needed to make the radio work later once the battery is reconnected.
OK. Disconnect the battery.
Next, get a powerful flashlight or shop light and luminate the your work area.
Third. Put a large soft towel on your car as not to scratch the finish with your body.
WARNING : Never lean you weight on and area without knowing what it is! For example, alot of techs and mechs lean on a radiator, only to break the plastic radiator only to cause even more damage!
Next, find the way to loosen the tensioner to remove the alternator belt. Usually there are (2) 10MM screws. One loosens the tension, the second is the longer, threaded adjustment screw. Always loosen the smaller screw first!
Ok, you got the belt off. Now, there should be a 13MM or 15MM bolt that needs tp be removed. You need the lift for this one because the passenger side tire and splash guard needs to be removed to get to these (sometimes). Also, you may need swivel ratchets. The best on the market are my MATCO they have a set for about $400 that make this type of work a breeze, as long as you have a lift and patience.
This job should take about 1 hour to do. Do not oevrtighten or undertighten the adjustment screw when putting back together. If possible, I actually count the number of turns I make to undo an adjustment screw, so I turn it exactly the same number of times when I am reinstalling. Good Luck.
