Question about 2004 Lexus RX 330

3 Answers

I have a 1993 LEXUS 400 LS. The car has two recurrent problems : 1) the instrument cluster goes on and off and then totally off after about 15 minutes. On hot days it may not illuminate from the start. This problem was "fixed" once by Lexus of Kendall - the circuit board was replaced. Within 10,000 miles of use the problem recurred and Lexus would not agree to take responsibility and required me to pay anew to take care of the problem. I took the car somewhere else and paid $2,000 plus. The problem came back a few thousand miles later. The car has only around 50,000 miles of use, mainly because I,m afraid to use it and not be able to see the instruments, especially the speedometer. 2) After about an hour of driving if the ignition is turned off, the engine will not restart. It will fire once and cut off immediately, as though there is a fuel supply peroblem. After that it will restart after about a 15 minute period,1/2 hour or longer on a hot day. This problem had been "diagnosed" and "corrected" by the same "Lexus" shop that last repaired the dashboard problem. They replaced the computer which is located behind the glovebox. The problems persist. The car is on the third cmputer. The car is still in showroom condition, with only 50,000 miles, and otherwise runs "like a dream".I want to keep this car. What can be done. Lexus has not been very supportive or accountable. HELP !! Thank you MIKE KING

The advice given for my problem, loose battery cables,is not correct.THE CAR HAS HAD TWO NEW lexus batteries properly installed and the problems have persisted. It is NOT A BATTERY PROBLEM.I could have figured that one out for myself. I would like to receive some really expert advice please.
    Thank you.

I do hear a relay clicking somewhere in the middle area of the dash when the instrument panel acts up.

I suspect that the starting problem might be attributable to a bad relay also in view of the fact that after sitting for a while it seems to (cool-off?) and go back to normal. THE DASH PROBLEM IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT.Sometimes from the very beginning the instrument cluster is off, after aperiod of driving it might flicker a few times and then may or may not illuminate and stay on for a while. Eventually it does go off again and stay off. Its really erratic, but mostly its off.

Bumps do not have any effect on the dashboard problem.I have tried the "smacking" thing many times. Does not work.

Today I will check out your "listen to the fuel pump" idea and see (hear) what we come up with.

Thanks for you help so far.

I suspect the dash board problems may be a result of a bad relay although i have not found the likely culprit... is there anything else that seems to be not functioning properly ?

a quick test for your second problem... is to wait till it happens again... leave the key in the start position and go to the rear of the vehicle and listen... you should be able to hear a noise (fuel pump).

I will look up any recalls or service bulletins that may be relevent to the problems you are having.

well just to seperate the problems for a moment.... you may also have either a bad ground... or a poor connection as well.... i will investigate further which relay controls the dash gauges and the information i have is not that specific. have you noticed if it flickers on if you hit a bump etc. you could also give the dash a smack (on the top) and see if that effects the function.... not that technical a solution but it will tell me something if it flickers or goes on

Hi,

I assume that there must be a battery terminals loose. Please check instrument panel if its lit or working. In such scenarios I would try the following After disconnecting the leads, make sure the terminals are clean for good contact. Also, I would run a battery test to make sure the battery is good. In my case, the battery needed to be replaced. After everything is cleaned up and the system rebooted, connect batery cables. Hope the instrument panel lights up!

Thank You

1995 Lexus 400 instrument cluster light not working. It appears to be some capacitor related problem in the cluster circuit board whic is very common prblem in ls400 from 90 - 98 models. Does anybody know...

You are better off getting the entire Cluster replaced, by any Lexus Dealer, and make sure they atleast give you a 12 month warranty on the part and the labor..Now it may cost a little more, than if you had someone else to do it, but its worth the peace of mind and money in the long run....

Dashboard works intermittently. Engine wont fire for awhile after about one hours use. Will start after a "cooldown" period of about 15-30 minutes.

I am not a Lexus expert, instead I am a Ford expert. However, I expeienced this type of problem once on a Ford and it ended up being the ignition switch, not the key cylinder but the electrical part. The ignition switch handles all the current flow for everthing that comes on when the key is turned to "ON".
WHen the current flow got heavy with the a/c blower on high, it overheated the switch. Ended up replacing the switch and installing a 12 gauge wire on the switch to act as a heat sink for the wire that feeds the blower motor.
Motors, rear defroster, horns and cig lighter take a lot of current to run.

good luck. report back on findings. I'm curious.

Gluster gauge won't illuminate

Hello hayeizmyhome...Very low mileage for a 1990 model. However... this is usually around the mileage interval the dreaded instrument cluster, panel and dash light failures start...lights will flicker, then go out, gauges will start going up and down, lcd's will become hazey and hard to read....etc.
The instruments are illuminated both day and night while the ignition is on.
When the ignition is off, the panel goes dark and you can’t see the gauges at all.
The lexus has an electronic circuit board behind the inst. cluster that has been the problem. Very expensive repair if done by dealer.
*TIP* This circuit board can be repaired if you know a good electrical technician much cheaper.
The recommended timing belt replacement interval on the LS is 120k...water pump should be replaced also, the timing belt runs the water pump. The LS has a non-interference engine, meaning if the belt breaks, no damage will be done to the engine...
Hope this answers your questions..and your lexus runs for many more miles...with proper care and maintainnace, it will.
