Question about 2003 Dodge Ram Maxi

1 Answer

2003 5.7 hemi has a real anoying intermitent engine noise

This noise sounds like a hollow popping, like if a piston head blew a hole in it. the noise will cycle about every 6 seconds and last for about 3 seconds. This is at idle speed and when the rpm increases, so dose the noise, in speed and sound level. This noise can be heard over the other diesel like clattering noises, that supposed to be "Normal" even when your about 25 ft from the truck This was evident shortly after warranty replaced the exhaust manifolds . I have tried everything such as different gas types, mid and regular. The last 20,000 Km I'm using Castrol synthetic oil, top of the line oil and air filters and Shell gas. There is no loss of power and besides the noises, the truck runs great. I have not found anyone/shop to solve or find out what the problem is, I am concerned because there is only 8,000 KM left on my warranty of 60,000 Km, go figure

Sounds like an exhaust valve has a crack or piece broken out of it. take it to a engine machine shop and let them listen to it. could need a head removed to fix

Is it possible to adjust the timing on a 1.4L petrol Holden Barina 2001 engine?

If the engine ran with out coolant and damaged the head then there is a very real probability that the pistons have picked up on the cylinder walls which will cause the noise . Do a compression test to see the condition of the rings (lost tension) and the bores

upper engine knock can be caused by a worn cam shaft worn lifters, although this is usually a ticking noise. piston skirt collapse which can sound like its in the upper engine. a bad wrist pin even a valve hitting the top or the piston like carbon build up on top of the piston.

2000 chrysler and i heard a loud pop and oil puddle

blew the piston rod through the oil pan if you have bad luck. if your lucky the oil filter blew off and wont start because oil is low. look under car for where oil is coming from. if there is a piece of metal hanging out the hole your engine is toast

2003 Eddie Bauer Ford Expedition 5.4l just made loud pop sound under hood and is now running very badly, Do you think the engine blew??

a spark plug may have stripped out and popped out of the cylinder head. Ford dealers are making lots of money fixing this common problem.

2003 dodge ram 1500 5.7 hemi replaced piston and head now have tapping noise from front of engine. sounded like exhuast leak replaced gasket. not loud at idle but when start driven gets loud.

Could be a bad gasket tightness if you replaced the gasket. The exhaust manifold could be not torqued down evenly causing a gap to exist allowing exhaust gas vapor and sound to escape at the cylinder head connection.

I have a 2003 mitsubishi galant with 2.4 ltr engine. it had a loud popping noise coming from timing cover. started it back up a few diff. times trying 2 pinpoint problem. last time i started it, it started...

Uh oh Clunks are a real bad sound. Valves hitting pistons etc Check crankshaft turns by handand check valve gear rockers etc. To push in tensioner put it in a vise and SLOWLY wind in There is a small hole near piston end of tensioner that you have to line up with piston and put a small allen key or nail through to retain piston untill you refit it With belt in place only then remove pin

4.3 vortec engine , engine noise, knocking or tapping on top of engine, not when cold , but starts noise when it heats up, and gets louder as it gets hotter and hotter!!! Sounds like noise is in the center...

The knocking or ticking is going to determine if it is in the top end, lifters, push-rod or rocker arm issue or the bottom end that would include pistons or bearings.
If it is a ticking noise, it will more than likely be a valve train issue.
If a knocking noise, piston or crankshaft related problem.

Attached is a web site that you can listen to a piston slap which is a known issue for your 4.3.
Listen to the noise and see if it sounds similar to your problem. A piston slap will generally sound as though it is coming from the central area of the engine.
Listen to the recording and let me know.
