4l60e transmission leaking fluid

I have a 4l60e trans from a 1996 suburban. Its leaking fluid from the large electrical connector on the top pasenger side? Any IDeas ?

if your transmission has been slipping, it means that the clutch plates and steel plates have gone. youre going to have to have it rebuilt or swapped out for a rebuilt one.

A transmission filter should never get dirty enough to prohibit the valve body and pump from getting enough fluid. unless you have driven the truck through deep water or heavy off road use.

The 99 suburban has a 4L60E or 4L80E transmission. depending on the chassis package, If you have a 1.5" rear yoke diameter(the thing connecting the trans to the driveshaft), its a 4L60E, if its larger you have the other. The trans are usually good for at least 150K miles under normal use.

O.k. the small hose that you have coming out of the case is the trans vent. The one going up the firewall is for the transfer case. The trans vent should be hooked to the transfercase vent. You say you have a 383? Are you running the fuel injection system. Is this a 4L60E (the stock transmission). If you have fluid coming from the vent, the transmission is getting too hot. Replace the cooler. Do away with the radiator cooler and add one to the front in front of the condenser.

Before guessing at transmission problems, check the fluid level (car warmed up, engine running in Park on level ground) and have the PCM scanned for trouble codes FIRST.
Secondly, put a line pressure gauge (or visit a local trans shop) on the pressure test port and go for a drive to verify proper line pressure. Base pressure at idle in P,N,OD should be around 70psi and around 140psi in R. Max line pressure should be at least 190psi at WOT in 1st or 2nd, 225psi is optimum. If base pressure is low, trans or pump is worn out. If max pressure is low, check EPC solenoid. If reverse is slow to engage, and line pressure does not come up to at least 130psi in reverse, replace the boost valve with a Transgo 0.500" boost valve (easy fix in pan).
Slow, slipping or no reverse: “lo-reverse” clutches are worn out, fluid leak in the reverse apply circuit, or broken sunshell. It is possible to remedy a fluid problem by removing the checkball from its cage in the case in the rear of the trans may help (must remove valvebody), or adding a high-viscosity additive such as Lucas Transmission additive or other seal restorer product. May also have worn boost valve (can replace in the pan).
Soft shifting, gradual performance degradation: Poor line pressure rise due to leaking boost valve, clogged EPC filter screen, failing EPC solenoid, or worst case: leaky seals throughout. Transgo HD2-C kit fixes first two without removing trans. Seal restorer may fix last problem, but probably R&R. Also try a transmission flush with BG brand products (Firestone stocks it).
No movement in any gear: pump failure, or total loss of fluid. R&R, or refill pan and find the leak. If out of fluid, avoid running the engine until the trans is refilled to avoid pump damage. To check for pump failure, check fluid level with the engine off, then start the engine and recheck fluid level. If level does not go down when engine is running, the pump is broken.
1-2 or 2-3 shift is slow/soft above part throttle: Trans is on its way out. R&R

Suburban,Yukon,Tahoes basically large suvs and trucks share the transmissions, but need to use vin number to know, dealer has that information if selling this transmission tell buyer to call dealer with their vin number to see if it is compatible.

Shifting gears


All anybody can do is make sure you have no engine issues like vacuum leaks or connectors that fell off sensors. Then look on the passenger side of the trans from underneath. If you see a rubber vacuum line in the side unplug it and look to see if its wet with trans fluid. If so the vacuum modulator is bad. If ok or does not exist then you will need to get the truck inspected for codes. Also look at the condition ofthe fluid It shoud be pink. If not then you may have a problem. Three years ago is a longtime. Anything could of failed in the trans. They dont replace everyything when they rebuild.

I have a 93 Chevy Suburban 1500 and the Transmission won't shift into any gear. I have an 1983 Chevy Suburban Transmission that is still good. Can I use the 83 Transmission in my 93 Suburban?


Not without a little adapting. The 1993 has a 4l60e which is electronically controlled and has shift solenoids. If the 83 is an overdrive it is a 700r4 which is the same trans but not electronic. If you put it in the speedo wont work and you will need to install a T.V. cable so the transmission will shift. The 93 won't go forward or backwards?

Electric transmission


Hi. I have a '93 Chevy Suburban that is on the 3rd transmission. What you probably have is the earlier 700R4 transmission. What you should have is the 4L60E. I have done ALOT of research on these transmissions, and what I've found out is this: the 4L60E is essentially the same as the 700R4, with the exception that the 4L60E is completely controlled by the vehicle's computer. The 700R4 uses a more antiquated valve body with a TV (throttle valve) cable. In theory, you could use the 700R4 if you connect the TV cable and properly adjust it. If it's a 4X4, your speed sensor is in the transfer case, so that wouldn't be an issue. The 4L60E used in '93 and '94 will only work in those model year vehicles, because of the type of shift solenoids used. The newer units used pulse width modulation solenoids, as opposed to the older on/off solenoids. I have run my truck with the transmission unplugged and the engine still runs fine. The major problem with using the earlier 700R4as opposed to the correct 4L60E, would be emissions compliance. If you want to discuss this further, email me at big.bad.bones@hotmail.com

no that is the trans if it smells and looks like gear oil you need a transmission trans for transmission lock is the position to lock down the stick in this 4l60e your fluid is just that dirty there is NO way to check gear oil from the top at all once again that is your trans fluid yes it should be bright red but if it looks like gear oil you most likely have waited way too long to check it...
