First the obvious, are the lug bolts all tight? If so then I'd look for a loose joint on the rear tie rod or a worn outer joint bushing on the upper control arm. If noise occurs while rolling slowly then it might be a worn CV joint in the drive axle.

Bad wheel bearing. Have it changed and get an alignment to fix the problem.

Knocking noise

Wow this one's tough without being there...it could be either one that you mentioned, does it make the sound when driving or setting still. If it sounds like it's up high like in the dash, maybe a bearing that supports the steering column. Best thing would be to get it up on a lift and turn the steering wheel and look for the sound under the car to see where it's coming from..could be the rack teeth but most likely a bearing...good luck hunting

What else could make a knocking noise only in reverse?

Is the sound coming from that wheel or the other one?

First check the lug nuts. If they are tight it might be a wheel bearing.

2002 Mazda Protege 5: I am having a knocking sound coming from my front right of the car.The noise is most noticable when turn right with speed. The noise is also there when driving straight but not all...

I would check the sway bar linkages, they are usually the first to go, and they are only $40. Its an easy 'do it yourself' project, remove the old one with torches or a grinder (with a small cutting wheel). You can also use a vise grip and sockets but it takes longer.

You can't tell these are damaged until you remove the part. I change mine every 100 000km or so.
