Question about 1998 Toyota Camry

1 Answer

Overheating problem Hi. I own a toyota camry 1998GX with a 5s-fe engine. My first problem was the rpm was shooting up to 2000rpm when im in neutral (btw automatic transmission), so when i put it in gear it surges forward. So we did a top overhaul of the engine (brought the cylinder head to a machine shop to clean it and set the valves)Bought an overhauling kit (gaskets valve seal, etc.)after the top overhaul was done the car started to over heat! Cleaned the radiator, checked the radiator cap and added long life red coolant, checked all the fans (working fine), replaced thermo switch on radiator, replaced thermostat. Cleaned the servo. The thing is when the thermostat is in, it over heats. But when we take it out, everything is ok! And the when the engine is cold it heats up very slow. I dont want to take out the thermostat because the fuel consumption is very high. And people say it has an adverse effect on the engine. Now they are saying that i should buy a new cylinder head because it may have a hairline crack. But the car doesnt emit black or white smoke and it runs fine even without the thermostat. But the gas consumption is killing me... Can anyone please help me, we've been fixing the car for 3 weeks and we keep buying parts that doesnt solve the problem. If anyone can email me it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.. vmg77@hotmail.com

If you have no white mucky substance, or coolant directly on your oil dipstick your cylinder head should be just fine, and you have no head gasket leak. Have you taken your thermostat and put it in boiling water to see if it actually opens? And/or, are you sure you installed the thermostat in the proper direction?

When you had sent the cylinder head to the machine shop did they pressure test it?
If it had hair line crack there sure would be water lose in the radiator and also it would probabely too mix it wth engine oil.
Please recheck the valve clearance if they are tight you do sometimes get the over heating issues.
Check the thermostates operating temperature...at what degrees must it open, try replace it with a lower temperature i mean the one to open earlier say if you have one which opens at 89 degrees C change it to a say one which opens at 79/80 degrees.
Hope this helps!

spend the money for a 'Chilton's' manual for your vehicle. This way any issues you may have with your vehicle can be addressed. After all your car is what....22 yrs old?

What are the timing marks for a 1996 toyota camry, 2.2

2S-ELC, 3S-FE and 5S-FE Engines

When install,
align the crankshaft pulley set key with the pulley key groove. Install the pulley. Tighten the pulley bolt to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).

On 2S-ELC engines, turn the crankshaft pulley and align the 0 mark on the lower (No. 1) timing belt cover.
Align the camshaft knock pin with the matchmarks on the oil seal retainer.

On 2S-ELC/USA engines, align the knock pin with the pin hole on the timing pulley E mark side. On 2S-ELC/Canadian engines, align the knock pin with the pin hole on the timing pulley.

On 3S-FE and 5S-FE engines, align the knock pin with the groove of the pulley, and slide the pulley onto the camshaft with the plate washer and set bolt.
