Hi, you will want to inspect the Power steering gear on this vehicle. the gear box may be misaligned or worn. it could also have loose mounting bolts that are working there way of the housing. this will cause the stall in the wheel during the return.

I would also inspect the Center link as well. this may be damaged or improperly aligned. and last, i do recommend inspecting the Tie rod ends as well. the ends may be worn or fualty.

Power steering tank full but still turning hard. 2001 chevy venture. Any ideas

With engine running, steering turned hard right or left, can you see the fluid churn in the power steering reservoir? If not, maybe one of the power steering lines is blocked?

I just wanted to add, with some makes and models. With everything off, I remove the power steering belt. I take the return line loose from pump, aim into container, rotate the pulley by hand, see if any fluid comes out of return line? The return line should be low pressure, usually held to pump by hose clamp. The high pressure line has threaded fittings.

Center a rack and pinion from under the dash

yes you possibly can ( depends on the room available.)
I would do the centring at the top of the rack and pinion as this is where a multi spline is that will allow for correct centring.
when you get the shaft off the box
firstly turn the rack from lock to lock ( wheels of the ground) and position the shaft at the midpoint of the turns counted fro left to right
next with the steering wheel place it in the straight ahead position
put the shaft back on the rack and tighten up the lock bolt

Engine light on code is P0340

I had a brand new steering rack fitted by a mechanic, when he fitted the rack he forgot to connect the column, turned the steering wheel & said oops I forgot to connect the column, connected it all, tested it & it was fine, the day after there was play on the steering wheel, an inch left & an inch right before it steered, ive just got used to it now. But why would you say it was doing that?

I have a fiat idea. It recently had new tyres and the wheels were aligned symmetrically. However, this left the self-centring of the electric steering slightly left of centre. I don't think the wheel...

I am not familiar with this particular car, but every car has a mechanical way of adjusting the steering linkage such that the steering wheel will be centered, even if this means removing the steering wheel and replacing it in the correct spot. A lot of VW's are done this way. What has happened with your car is simply laziness on the part of the technician. He could have insured that your steering wheel was straight through counter adjustments in the steering linkage and properly test driving the car. I do wheel alignments for a living and would never let a car go like this. Take it back, demand it be fixed properly, ask for a print-out of the alignment, if they can't provide a print-out, ask for your money back and take the car somewhere that can.
