If you are trying to replace the reverse band and dont know where it is you should not be doing it! the reverse band is inside the transmission and you need to completely disassemble the trans to get to it, you will need to rebuild the trans, if you dont know where that part is you have no business trying to rebuild a trans as you will ruin it, and that repair is better left to experts.

1997 jeep cherokee ,when it gets hot and you turn ignition off.once restarted will only drive in 1st gear

so you are saying, A/T transmission problems.
do elaborate, its a complex system there.
does reverse work ok.
did you check fuses first.
then check AFT fluid levels using oper guide method not guessing?
scan it yet, using any cheap scan tool (you or any shop)
if you see p07xx errors (DTC) those are real, post em.
last is a full flush and filter. inside,

the transmisson may be electronically shifted, like the AW4 is,
you never stated what trans is there, and that does matter.
if inputs to the TCM are wrong it will not shift at all.

1996 jeep grand cherokee limited the thing runs like a champ it is just slipping in reverse, is there a adjustment for this? has a 5.2L engine

If the trans fluid isn't low. Then check for a burnt smell...either way ur trans is going out. There are things u can do to prolong it's life. Change the fluid and filter. Come to a complete stop before changing from a drive gear to reverse or reverse to a drive gear. Hope this helps !

1995 jeep cherokee coolant line broke we fixed it

Take it back to the shop that fixed it or if you did it yourself, check that you didn't disconnect a sensor/plug from the transmission.

Reverse does not work all forward gears work fine however it does shift a little harder since reverse went out

Man, I have had that problem before in a camaro years ago and it was that the reverse clutches went out but, you could drive it forward and had to repair tranny.

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2w Drive won't go into reverse.

Service the transmission and when you have the pan off, adjust the reverse band. It is either out of adjustment or worn out. Try the adjustment first and if it doesn't get any better, you'll have to have the transmission rebuilt.

Transmission slips or doesn't engage in reverse

Service the transmission, when you have the pan off, adjust the rear band. Loosen the lock nut. Tighten the adjuster to 10 ftlbs. Loosen the adjuster 2 turns and tighten the locknut. You either have an model 500 transmission (6 cylinder engine) or model 518 (V8 engine). In both transmissions reverse is controlled exactly the same. If adjusting the band doesn't fix it, then it will need rebuilt.

My '94 Grand Cherokee Limited has no power in reverse.

It sounds like the reverse band is out of adjustment. Three things can cause this, reverse band, front clutch and the overdrive direct clutch. To test the band, drive the truck in manual low up to 25 mph. Then let off, if the transmission doesn't pull the engine down, the band needs adjusted. If the front clutch is the problem, 3rd gear will be act weird too. The only test I know of for the overdrive direct is to inspect it, so process of elimination will have to work. Hopefully the problem is the band, because you can pull the pan, service the trans, adjust the band, and be done. Any of the other problems and you are looking at a rebuild. Good luck.

2001 Jeep won't reverse

Depending upon what transmission you have, it could be a bad solenoid or control unit, bad reverse band or servo or a few other things. If you find no external problems, you will need a trans shop to examine it. If rpm drops when reverse is selected that means it's trying to go but has an internal problem.
