Can't pull out 97' Cadillac engine from the top

Is it possible to take the 32 valve northstar engine out from the top? Every time I try to hoist it up it jams up against the sub frame, and it there is not enough space between the motor and the transmission for the motor to fully disengage from transmission housing. how do you get to the bolts to undo the transmission from the block? i am trying to pull my northstar and i am having difficulty trying to get to the tranmission bolts, i cant even see them!

The fans come on at 220 degrees but the engine continues to get hotter ? Have you tried running the engine with the thermostat out to check for flow and blockages ?

1997 cadillac deville engine is overheating. can your ''thermagasket kit'', be used on 4.6L northstar 32 valve V8 engine. If so, approximately how long will the treatment last and how much does it cost?

When you say thermagasket kit,I assume you mean one of those silly DIY gasket sealant liquids that you put in the engine.

You should not use these type of products on ANY engine let alone the Northstar.

To cure a headgasket leak, replace the headgasket.....there is no miracle cure.

On the Northstar, you will damage the cooling system, plus you will continue to have issues as time goes on.

How do you know you have a blown head gasket?

Here is something to consider.......

The most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line(small hose). The purge line is designed to purge air out of the cooling system.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank (not the cap) ,this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating.
If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.Or trace the hose back until you find the blockage.
The hose goes in to the engine to a crossover and comes out the other side close to the thermostat housing, the blockage may be there.

Whta size thermostat for a 97 northstar engine?

Your engine is a 4.6 liter 281 CID V8.

There are thermostat rated for 180f or 195f for your engine,

I will select a 195f thermostat with a pressure relief poppet/valve to protect the coolant hoses.

4.6 northstar 97 SLS how to drop engine to remove heads

well i am not saying that you are wrong but i am a GM mechanic, and these northstar headgaskets are what make me money. you will not be able to pull the engine through the top like you can for most cars, it will not fit! and yes you do have to pull the engine to do a headgasket because on them northstars, you cannot just pull the valve covers off, you have to lift the front side up and twist them off, and in order to do this you cannot do it with the engine in the car! you have to life the chassis off of the car! not only tht but the reason these head gaskets go bad is because there is not enough meet on the head bolt threads! so you will need to redo the threads on the block so this wont happen in the future! i hope this helps!

There is a flat spot at the front of the right side (passenger side) cylinder head will have the last 6 of the Vin and letter code at the end of it for id purposes. You will see it looking down from the top of the motor.
