SOURCE: replace neutral safety switch on a 1988 gmc sierra

Typically the Neutral Safety Switches are located with the gear selector, either in the column or the floor.

Hope this helps,

SOURCE: Just curious to know more about the clutch safety

The way the clutch switch works not to be to simplistic is the vehicle will not crank unless you have the clutch pushed in. It may be that you need to replace the switch its not hard or expensive to do. You may also be able to adjust it The neutral safty switch is feed from the clutch switch thats the master control because if the vehicle is not running you realy woun't need the neutral safety switch. You have a 2003 this switch should last longer then that the clutch switch. So look up under the dash at the top of the clutch pedal you will see a switch attached to the top fof the pedal and it will have a plastic threaded rod with a adjustment nut to control when the switch is triped to the on pisition adjust this nut so that the switch is compressed sooner and activates the switch with less travel distance before it gets to the floor. You still may need a new switch it depends but its inexpensive and easy to replace and will likely correct this problem

2003 Chevy Malibu has brand new starter.Battery is good.Anti theft n ot flashing.Just doesn't crank.Could it be starter relay?

Could be the starter relay but , could also be the park neutral safety switch , test by moving the gear selector to neutral . If it starts then more then likely the PNP switch is bad . Viewing wiring diagrams to see what all is involved in starter operation . Reading factory service info. for starter operation would be good too . The engine computer (PCM/ECM) probably energizes the starter relay . Free wiring diagrams here http://www.bbbind.com/free-tsb Enter vehicle info. year , make , model an engine . Under system click on engine , then under subsystem click on starting . Click the search button , then the blue link . Looking at the wiring diagram it just so happens there is no starter relay . Ignition switch sends battery voltage through the PNP directly to the starter solenoid . Could be the main battery cable , voltage drop testing will show if that is the problem .

Can't find the ignition relay for a 2000 Mitsubishi diamonte. Turn the key and absolutely nothing happens no sounds or anything . How

Battery good , cables and connections ? Voltage drop test starting circuit . Find a wiring diagram at http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html Your vehicle has no relay ! Try wiggling the gear selector from park to neutral . Check B+ voltage at the park neutral safety switch . When you turn key to start B+ voltage goes to the neutral safety switch , if switch is good ,B+ voltage goes through the switch if in park or neutral to the solenoid on the starter . IF all is good starter energizes and spins the engine over . Starter Voltage Drop If you can't fix it with this info , your best bet have it towed to a qualified repair shop .

2008 ford focus no start. neutral safety switch location?

Do you know how your starting system works ? Do you know about the starter relay ? All power comes to an through the starter relay . The park neutral safety switch is on the transmission. VEHICLE RELAYS Testing from the relay base If you have a anti-theft system problem the engine computer - PCM will not let the starter engage . Go to www.bbbind.com for a free wiring diagram of the starter circuit on your vehicle .

2000 chev wont start at key

I think the purple wire (or maybe the yellow) from the neutral safety switch goes to the coil side of the starter relay, turning it on so power is sent from there to the starter solenoid. You could check for this signal to the relay with a test light. The key must be held in start while you probe the other two terminals for the relay. If the signal is there, either a bad relay or the coil side of relay is not grounded properly. It is possible that the coil side ground is the neutral safety switch-grounding the relay's coil side only in park or neutral-in which case the nagging light on shifter (between off and run, it only works?) may be telling you the safety switch is the problem.

You may need to look at a wiring diagram, Greg. But the starter relay is the last component in the start circuit before the starter solenoid. From battery to ignition switch to "crank" fuse to neutral safety switch to starter relay to starter solenoid to starter-and back to battery through ground. That is the start circuit. Just that the wiring tying them all together makes it complicated.

Ignition switch

The switch can be tested with a multi-meter to see if it is the problem. The switch will have a hot at all times wire going into it. If the switch has power out on the start wire with key held in crank, or if there is continuity between the power in wire terminal and the start wire terminal (on the switch side of harness connector) when the key is held in crank, then the switch is good. Check the neutral safety switch, then the starter relay, then the starter solenoid for a fault. You may need to see a wiring diagram to find the color of the start wire coming out of the switch. A single wire from switch to the neutral safety switch and on to the starter solenoid.

My 92 lincoln town car will not start i have replaced the starter, the neutral safety switch and the battery but when i turn key nothing happens but can jump starter and will crank

Yes there is a starter relay in the wiring diagram.
The yellow and lite blue wire goes from the starter solenoid to the relay. There is a yellow wire from the relay to a 30amp fuse. The key switch powers thru the neutral safety switch and then powers the relay on.

The car won"t crank, 1992 Volkswagon Passat

If the switch (neutral safety switch) is broken, it will not crank regardless whether you jump the battery or a new battery is installed. I don't have specific manual for your year that's why my advice is as in general. With a remote starter tool, bypassing the solenoid wire with remote starter which is connected to the positive terminal of the battery of it's other end. Once positive current flows from the battery, through the remote switch, flowing towards the solenoid, the starter should engage indicating a bad wiring harness connection from ignition switch. If it doesn't crank at all you may have a bad starter assembly and needs replacing. If your starter is clicking using it's own battery power, your battery is low of charge or your charging system is malfunctioning.

Pls, rate this suggestion, thank you.

Bronco wont start 88 ford bronco just replaced tranny and now won't start. i've hooked everything back up but one of the wires to the transfer case bc i broke the plug in. any ideas why it wont start...

The neutral safety switch is located on the side of the transmission and it is usually attached behind the shifter linkage and it is secured with two small bolts that can be loosened up to allow for adjustment of the neutral safety switch.

To adjust the neutral safety switch place the transmission into neutral, (block the tires) there is a notch or and indent marker on the housing of the neutral safety switch that should be lined up with a line on the face of the collar that is around the shifter detent shaft, and if they are not in alignment then loosen the two bolts that secure the neutral safety switch and then turn the neutral safety switch until they are aligned and then tighten the securing bolts to the neutral safety switch, and then test the starter. If the starter fails to engage then either the neutral safety switch is faulty, the neutral safety switch has been by-passed all this time and the by-pass (I will usually find things like a paper clip shoved into the vehicles wire connector with electrical tape around it) has fallen out of the wire connector from the vehicle wiring harness, or the battery just went dead. if you have the neutral safety switch from the old transmission still available try using it to test the neutral safety circuit. I have provided you with an image to help assist you adjust the neutral safety switch.

On a 98 buick lasabre it does not start, battery is good, starter works(but no power to exciter wire when cranked), starter relay fine. I was wondering what was left to check, fusible link, park neutral...

Park neutral safety switch , try moving gear selector to neutral . If that doesn't let it start ,viewing wiring diagrams an testing the starter electrical circuit's with a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter .

Subaru ea81 starter solenoid wiring diagram

Some starter solenoids are mounted on the fender near the battery and some are on the starter itself.

Typically the ones mounted on the fender have two larger posts and one smaller post. For the larger posts: One connects strait to the positive post on the battery. The other connects strait to the starter. The smaller post connects to the neutral safety switch which connects to the start position of the ignition switch. Here is a diagram. Make sure the solenoid is grounded good.

For the solenoid that is mounted on the starter: Connect the positive post of the battery to the large post on the starter. Connect smaller neutral safety switch/ignition switch wire to the smaller post.

Here is a diagram if you have both solenoids

Don't forget to hook backup any other wires that were hooked to the positive side of battery/solenoid like alternator wire etc.
