Question about 2003 Honda Civic

1 Answer

Car will not start. Lights come on, radio plays, engine makes no noise.

I have a 2005 Honda Civic, maybe 140,000 miles on it. The car will not start. All the lights come on, the radio works, engine makes no noise. I had a new battery put in in December of 2008. This car has done this twice before, but always starts after a few days. Any help or thoughts would be very helpful!

I can't remember what the name of the component part was that was not working properly but when we got it replaced, everything worked no matter when we started it.  When it would rain, my wife's car would not start and did just like your car, and when weather brightened with no moisture in the air the car would have no problems.  But, in my State it rains a lot and we had to get it fixed.  For a 99 Merc Grand Marquis it was a $250 part to be replaced and we didn't like the price.  But, for the peace of mind we got it done over 2 years ago and never had the problem again.  It's some kind of electronic sensor relay component (to describe it as best I can remember) that had to be replace with the miles we had on the car.  It would have been replaced with dealership scheduled updates to the car, but who really can afford that?  Take your car to a local, non-franchise, shop.  These places are owned by mechanics from my Dad's generation and they're looking for work like this to help people get their daily drivers in working order.

I would get a second opinion on the diagnosis. That is not adding up. The fan is probably what took out your first motor so don't drive it.

Check the car battery, make sure the battery cables are connected properly. You may need to remove the cables and clean the battery terminals then reattach the battery cables.

2005 honda civic ex automatic stalled at 40 mph

Check the main fuses under the hood. There are several large ones there. A loose connection on one of them could have caused the sudden, complete electrical failure you described. If it is a loose connection, it would certainly explain why it "came back to life" by itself.

Also, might you possibly have any sort of aftermarket security system that has an immobilizer feature on it? While I wouldn't expect this to disable the entire car including the radio, if it were incorrectly installed I suppose it could.

I hope this help. Good luck!

Grinding noise

I believe what you're saying is that after your car has been in park and you put it in gear to drive it makes a grinding noise for about 30 miles. I recommend checking you transmission fluid level and adding fluid as needed. You should do this fluid check while the engine is warm and car is idling. Since you have an 88 you probably have a lot of miles on it. I've had very good luck using Slick 50 High Mileage Automatic Transmission Treatment. A bottle of this costs around $15. If none of this works it may be time to take it into the shop or trade it in.
