Stand outside your car when it's quiet. Turn the key on (so the dash lights come on), and listen. You should hear almost like a buzzing or humming sound from the back of the car. Thats the fuel pump pressurizing the fuel system. If you dont hear it, the pump's not working. Check your fuses first, the fuel pump does have a fuse in the fuse box.

When you turn the key to the "on" position, you should hear the whine from the fuel pump if you crawl down on the ground and listen. If you are still not sure, check the the line pressure at the rail or crawl underneath, disconnect the gas line and have someone turn the key to the "on" position. That't the sure way of knowing.

Truck won't start.

one might think that there is a fuse or a relay gone bad or the fuel pump itself has gone the trip .

The fuel pump doesnt kick on when turning the key on

If you can hear the fuel pump, it is getting voltage. But the change in it's normal sound/tone that it makes has me more concerned with the pump itself. Sometimes the pump gives you clues that it's about to fail, but not always. The sound change is an indicator something is wrong inside the fuel tank. Have you done a pressure and volume check yet? That's the only sure method to see if the pump is working properly. If you do have a failing pump, I would highly recommend replace the filter too! It's cheap and will save you a lot of headaches if they're done at the same time

1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera will not start. need to know were the fuel relay is located. we thing its the fuel pump but would like to try the relay first. car ran on friday. started to check tail lights...

I would check the fuses in the fuse box first there might be a fuse for the fuel pump that's burnt out.As far as the relays it should say on the inside of the cover to the engine compartment fuse box.If you have the owners manual it should say in there also.

I have a 2002 chevy silverado that i think the fuel pump is bad on. Is there a way to check the fuel pump. I dropped the gas tank and removed the fuel pump. Is there a way to bench test it?

If you run a fuel pump without fuel, the life expectancy of the pump goes way down. Since you think that the pump is bad and you've gone to the trouble of removing the pump, change it out, especially if if there is a lot of miles on your truck.

02 silverado stopped running today while driving..had it towed back to house...think it's the fuel pump...or is there a fuel pump relay that may have gone bad?

Could be a relay or fuse, if ok check for voltage down at fuel pump harness over by gas tank ,probe wire's only one will have voltage with key on , then check other wire's should have voltage at one of the other wire's while cranking engine only and should go away when stop cranking, if you do have that voltage replace fuel pump.Good luck.Let us know if you need more help.

Want to know if where the fuel pump is located

its under the back set on top of the gas tank. remove the back seat you will see an acxess panel. remove the panel and you will see where the pump is mounted in the tank. Simply unbolt and disconnect hoses and wires to remove.
