Question about 1995 Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

Car wont run when warm

My 1995, 6 cylinder, pontiac grand am will not run once it has warmed up. It starts fine and will idle for about an hour but when you go to put it in gear it stalls. If you drive it for a little while it will do the same thing!!! the speedometer will drop to zero and then jump back up to your speed all of the lights on the dash will start blinking and flashing and the car loses all power. It may restart once or twice but after that it will just crank. If you let it sit for awhile it will usually restart but wont run for long. I had a radiator put in the car last fall, other than that it has not given me any problems. Any ideas I would greatly appriciate, Thank you!!!!

It may be a ignition module you can have it tested if you remove it at your local autozone for free. and check the crankshaft position sensor also

It has rough idle when you first start it then straightens out after warming up

sounds like low compression at start up do to piston slap and not alowing car to warm up over the years before driving off. 3.1, 3.4, 3.5 motor pistons are exact size at operating temp there for cold temps at start up cause the pistons to slap the cylinder wall.. Gm engineers did this to reduce operating temp while driving by lowering friction in the cylinder. problem is most people these days start there cars and take off down the road..my suggesting would be to check piston compersion at operating temp and see if it meets spefications for ur mottor before replacing any other parts...
