Brakes smelling like burning wires

Its happended twice now. First I thought it was wires but then I found out my ebrake didnt get completly poped. SO it was riding the break while I drove and it smelled like burning wires. But now its doing it again and I havent even used the ebrake and its been a couple weeks since the first time

It is possible that one of the brake cables is rusty and it did not release completely. You could also have an excessive amount of brake dust inside the rear drums.

Car dashboard lights wont turn on and smell of burning wires


If you're smelling insulation burning - STOP. Fuses should be blowing before insulation melts / burns.

Have the car checked my a trusted mechanic before using anything in the car that makes the wiring burn or melt.

Burning smell from drivers side rear wheel


This happens often on Fieros. It turns out that the clamp that holds the brake hose rusts. The rust presses against the hose, restricting it's flow. You don't notice when the brakes are worn and basically not working, but after repairs you get locked up or overheated brakes. Remove or replace clamp and or hose.

Burning smell brakes


Most people do not remove the rear rotors and inspect the Emergency Brake shoes. These often peel off the metal backing on the shoe and jam inside the interior Drum of the rotor. Some people will hear a rusty grinding noise after pulling away from a stop.

These brakes have the old "star-wheel" adjusters and may need to be adjusted more loosely to remove the rotor. Its a bad system in my opinion; the drum always rusts and corrodes and the Ebrake shoes are banana peel thin. With corrosion, the drum acts like a grinder and chews up the brake shoes. Some other configurations use a mechanical link on the caliper to make the service brakes act in an Emergency. It will override a hydraulic failure, but you still need good pads on the caliper.

My 2003 automatic four cyl elantra hesitates to get moving after a stop or when slowing down when I step on the accelerator, it does not rev up when I hit the gas it just take some time for it to respond...


No fuel delivery is fine im sure i was having same issue thought the same thing so i changed fuel pump. Still same thing try checking your rear drum brakes under neath the rotor that are for your emergency brake your ebrake is sticking inside the drum everything is old and prolly needs replaced try checking the brakes jack it up and try turning one rear wheel then the other one wen ebrake is down and wheels are in the air the rear wheels should spin freely if not then the drum brakes r sticking check it out like isaid i had same issue and spent money that didnt need to be spent

Installed new break shoes on rear of an 04.. resulting in Excellent breaking ability. within 500 miles they self adjusted to the point that they all but seized and almost made the vehicle unable to...


BOTH SIDES lock up, you never said, big error that............!
if once side, then use other side as working sample for
getting bad side right.

your lucky , only brakes, try axle bearing... ugh.
brake not break.
did you RTM (read the manual yet)
for sure its together wrong. for sure.
the FSM v2 chapter 4 covers all this.... (or alldata dot com...)

the rules for the adjuster, if any rust found, get new ones.

drum brakes and for sure self adjusters are a Rube Goldberg deal. Like magic if they work at all...... dig?

chapter 4C5 to 7 in the FSM covers assembly
never take brakes apart with out full camera photos.
rule 2. ( in the oldn days ,we;d make hand drawings. )_
some have a memorize this, called photo graphic memory.
do you have that, not me , im 65 at 19, maybe.....
thare are 2 parts that can jam.
the adjuster screw, can be rusty,
the hand brake cam device is set wrong.
the other side is a bar that spaces the shoes.
it too can be jammed, has small spring and toggles.

things can be put in the wrong holes on the shoes.
some shoes have extra holes for different years and invite this error.

in the off chance, (still guessing the both sides riddle)
someone set the emergency brake wrong,
there are 2 ways, (never assume, unless assume all is wrong.)
last guy set them to match old worn shoes.
last guy , set them wrong.
or set them unbalanced, and is very hard to balance them....... ask my how i know.....

the hand brake must be 5-7 notches, if less BAD !
if wrong here, the self adjusters will MALF.


global steps should have been. per....
slacking the breaks, cables, at the Ebrake end.
photo the shoes. (cell phones suk at this)

replace them as found. or use the FSM if found wrong.....
make sure the self adjusters are not rusted, if yes, get new ones
at suzuki.
then operate the ebrake over and over to put the shoes to the
normal position (out)
then adjust the ebrake for 5-7 notches,
then blance the ebrake for even left and right effect when ebraking
safely off road.
if you skip the steps , in the FSM , bad things happen./

I installed rear shoes on an 03 grand vitara taking care to re-assemble what i thought was exactly how they came apart. however within 500 miles they adjusted themselves to the point that the vehicle...

it got younger in minutes.
i answered in depth on the 04 by you.
brake job, not break ,
and do not break your brakes. (you did)
a good way to remember that. huh?

self adjusters are the magic, they can be horrible to get right.
i bet the ebrake is set wrong, its set for worn shoes.
WAS it?
if yes the auto adjusters will fail, the FSM is clear on that.

when you set the ebrake, to loose, 5-7 clicks at the handle
this 100% releases the auto adjusters.
if not the adjusters fail, or if ok the above.
then the adjusters them self are bad (rusted) or assembled wrong.

My coolant was empty, they filled it , now I have this burning rubber smell


your brake caliber is hanging up not releaseing you'll have to replace the caliber and then bleed the brakes.have a nice day.

The van smells and the lug nuts are gettign burning hot after it is driven for only 10 minutes.


my best guess would be a brake pad or caliper that is sticking on the "on" position. This will cause the brake to generate a high amount of heat and it will heat up the lugnuts. the smell should smell like burning brakes because that is what is happening. the smell itself is hard to describe . if it gets extremely hot you will see smoke coming from the brake that is not working correctly. if it is one brake doing it the steering should also "pull" to the side of the problem. right wheel brake dragging will cause the vehicle to "pull" or verr to the right side.

I need to take off the cover to the dome light in my 2005 subaru outback wagon. how does the cover come off so i can change the bulb? i didnt wanna try pulling it off and break it.


The bulb in our 2005 Outback dome light has been replaced twice---I found the best way to remove the cover is with a dime.
